‘The Walking Dead’ No. 1 Sells for $10,000 on eBay

Logo text

AMC’s The Walking Dead is known for smashing basic cable records, and the comic book that inspired the series continues to earn its own bragging rights, too.

A copy of The Walking Dead No. 1 sold on eBay on Wednesday for $10,100, an unusually large sum for a comic book published in the 21st century. The copy earned a 9.9 out of 10 mint rating from CGC, the benchmark comics appraisal service.

“This is an investment as The Walking Dead is now a permanent part of our pop culture and continues to grow in popularity,” touts the comic’s eBay description from the seller, FlyersComics.

The seller could be right about the “investment” part. A 9.9 copy of The Walking Dead No. 1 sold for $7,000 in March. A year earlier, an identically graded copy went for what now seems like bargain, just $2,500.

The zombie series from Image Comics debuted to low sales in October 2003, with reportedly just 7,300 copies printed, a small number that helps account for its high value today. But the series has since become a phenomenon. In July, its 100th issue sold 375,000 copies in its first day, making it the best-selling comic book issue of the century.

The Walking Dead was created by writer Robert Kirkman, who serves as an executive producer of the AMC zombie drama. The Image series, printed in stark black and white, released its 104th issue Wednesday.

(UPDATED) The Walking Dead #1 CGC 0.5 Rises on eBay

When you want a little piece of comic book history, sometimes it doesn’t matter the price or the condition. A copy of The Walking Dead #1 graded a lowly 0.5 has recently gone up for bidding on eBay, and the eBay bids only continue to increase.

According to the CGC, there is only one copy at a 0.5 grade so far, with no other copies of the first issue below a 2.5.

TWD1

As of 10:35am PST 2/11, this copy of The Walking Dead #1 was at $191.38 with 16 bids.

EDIT: With 9 hours of bidding to go, as of 9:55am PST 2/20 the comic is now at $669.00!

What do you guys think? Isn’t it still kind of awesome to have a Walking Dead #1? Does the apocalyptic condition kind of add to the appeal? Does the .5 CGC rating add a comedic element? What would you pay for this?

Hat tip to Bleeding Cool, who spotted it first!

Image Comics, 2003/2004.

This comic book series turned out to be very successful for Image with the TV series making its debut on Halloween 2010. However, when the comic book series was first published back in 2003 there were only small print runs for many of the early issues making them pretty rare. Once the TV series took off, the demand for the early issues exploded and prices rose steeply.

Things got even better during the second TV series with prices rising astronomically on the early issues with #1-6 now all worth over $100 apiece in NM and other key issues such as #19 (Michonne's 1st appearance) going for around $250NM and #27 (first Governor appearance) for around $175NM.

The Walking Dead Art

The story centers around the character Rick Grimes, a small-town police officer from Cynthiana, Kentucky, who was shot in a firefight and went into a coma. He wakes sometime later in an empty hospital and has his first meeting with the walking dead. The story then focuses on his search for his family and also to other survivors who have banded together with him.

The Walking Dead #1 CGC cover

Prices seem to have peaked each time the TV show aired with a lot of interest in Michonne who appears in cameo at the end of the second series (from issue #19) and, given the low numbers of these books and their popularity, they are likely to remain as top modern collectibles.

The Walking Dead #1 Mature Readers

One last thing: it has been noted elsewhere that the initial print run of The Walking Dead #1 had the colors for the "MATURE READERS" warning printed in the wrong sequence so that the black lettering was printed on top of the white, which disappeared. This was noticed and corrected so the black on subsequent issues adds some shadow/depth to the white letters. However, it is worth noting that the CMYK printing process is subtractive and white is not generally printed (white is starting point i.e. the color of the paper) so it is almost certain that the black printing plate was changed or modified for the second batch.

Sources indicate that there are around 4,000 issues with the black lettering with the rest white, hence the white is rarer (although more white variants seem to come to market). The black lettered issues were printed first hence could be viewed as the first print with the white as the second print; the black lettered variant could also be viewed as an error variant of sorts. CGC don't differentiate between the two variants (they probably didn't spot the difference until many were graded i.e. too late) so this is probably just a storm in a teacup.

Walking Dead #1 Right now on eBay

Well, I sold my set of "The Walking Dead" #1-30 on eBay several years ago for about $40, but I'm not bitter at all oh no I'm not.

But seriously, who knew that one day "The Walking Dead" would become such a phenomenon that apparently a copy of the first issue just sold on eBay for $10,100? Yeah sure, maybe Robert Kirkman knew...but that's called The Power of Positive Thinking. I mean...really!

A caveat to this story: this copy of "The Walking Dead" #1 was graded 9.9 by the CGC (Certified Guaranty Company LLC), which basically means it was dead-on perfect mint. This is not the sort of comic one eagerly reads with grubby fingers. This comic is hermetically sealed, preserved in carbonite if you will. It is simply -- THE BEST. What Flyerscomics, who sold the periodical in question, referred to as "The Holy Grail Of Comic Books."

"Holy Grail": 9.9 ("not 9.8") graded copy of "The Walking Dead" #1

Usually when we think of comics going for a lot of $, we think of older issues like "Action Comics" #1, for instance. Does this historic sale mean that "The Walking Dead" has reached a certain echelon? Could this be a new "Golden Age" of comics? Like, an Aluminum Age? Will the sale set off a speculator frenzy among comics collectors similar to what happened in the 1990s? When would-be investors would buy whole long-boxes of first issues and multi-chromal die-cut polybagged variant covers, saying (I worked in comics retail in the early Nineties, I remember) "this is for my child's college tuition"?

Oh, brave new old world, with so many mylar super-seal collector's sleeves in it!

Warning: This article spoils the season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead.

Hours after the brutal and controversial seventh season premiere of The Walking Dead aired, Jesse Chin decide to sell his autographed copy of The Walking Dead #100 on eBay.

The comic was signed by creator Robert Kirkman at the 2012 New York Comic Con with the message, “I’m Sorry For Killing The Asian Guy”. s-l1600

Chin said he asked Kirkman in a “mock chastising way” to apologize for killing the Asian guy.

“He refused to apologize,” Chin recalls. “but he did it anyway because he’s a good sport and has a great sense of humor! Also being Asian, I’m not sure if he could tell if I was truly semi offended or not. I like when comic creators seem genuine. He definitely was one of those who were!”

I asked Chin why he’s selling this and other comics now. “I never thought I would sell my comics, but I’m a few years removed from being really into the hobby and I just think it’s sitting there wasted in my basement.”

Meanwhile, the Asian population in this post-apocalyptic zombie world drops down to zero.

The World's Worst Condition Copy Of The Walking Dead #1 Already At $191 On eBay

Posted on by Rich Johnston

$_57Some people really really want a copy of The Walking Dead #1 and the condition is immaterial.

Checking the CGC census, there is only one copy at a 0.5 grade that has been slabbed. And nothing else below a 2.5.

But it seems that even this might be worth the effort, as that copy is now selling on eBay for over $191 after sixteen bids.

Which, yes, is insane, but the TV show has just started up again and the comic itself is doing gangbusters…

The listing reads,

The owner had no clue that Walking Dead comics were worth anything and drove around in his car for months with this book laying in the back seat, the floor board,up in the back window, etc…he thought he threw it away until he went looking through the stuff in his car,are there it was!
