Have you ever spent hours collecting different mobs in Minecraft, or creating the perfect livestock farm, but felt there was still something missing? Maybe the hostile mobs aren't challenging or interesting enough for you anymore? There are so many mods out there for you to explore, including those which aim to improve the player's experience with mobs. Even a single mod can make the game much more enjoyable, especially when tailored to your own interests.

RELATED: Must-Try Minecraft Mods, Ranked By Popularity

Mod libraries such as CurseForge make it easy for you to search for and download mods, or modpacks (groups of mods designed to fit together), which are suited to your tastes. Whether you are using Forge or Fabric to run your mods, there are thousands to choose from.

Update on August 17, 2021 by Sharnelle Earle: New mobs and enemies add challenge to a game that you've beaten years and years ago. Though the game is around a decade old, Mojang Studios continues to update it by adding new animals, ore, and more. People have poured years worth of hours into the game so a new axolotl here and a new ore there might not be enough. If you find yourself bored and have explored all Minecraft has to offer, installing mob mods will enhance your experience. New challenges, biomes, and bosses will make Minecraft feel brand new. Below are some more community mods that add unique enemies to the game.

13 DivineRPG: A Fantasy Role-Playing Game

  • New dimensions
  • Armor sets and weapons
  • 115 new mobs
  • New blocks

This mod turns Minecraft into an RPG experience. Collect gold, take down bosses, and explore taverns. DivineRPG is a huge overhaul for adventures. If you're more a fan of fantasy RPG games than survival games, this is the mod for you.

Aside from the medieval exploration that DivineRPG adds to Minecraft, there are hundreds of new enemies and monsters to find while you explore the new dimensions and clear out dungeons.

12 The Aurorian: Explore A Mystical Dimension

  • New biome
  • Dungeons
  • Three new bosses
  • Unique ore

The Aurorian is an ethereal expansive mod that adds a magical dimension to Minecraft. This new world is called the Aurorian and it's always nighttime in this biome. Tons of new items and creatures can also be found in this world.

The mod adds abandoned ruins, new mobs, and more crafting potential. Five original tracks were recorded for this mod, so new background music can be heard as well.

11 Pixelmon: Collect Pokemon In Minecraft

  • Collect Pokemon
  • Heal, capture, and fight Pokemon
  • Quests

This is the ultimate Minecraft mod for additional creatures if you're a Pokemon fan. Instead of bosses and random animals as new mobs, you get Pokemon added to the game.

With Pixelmon, hundreds upon hundreds of Pokemon can be found and collected. There will be a nurse NPC and many more new mechanics and items to help you maintain Pokemon and Pokeballs. To this day transformations, abilities, and new Pokemon are added to the Pixelmon mod.

10 Alex's Mobs: New Mob Mechanics and Use

  • Fictional creatures
  • Real-world species
  • Unique drops
  • All new mobs have a purpose

Alex's Mobs adds over 40 new creatures to the game, including real-world animals such as elephants, kangaroos and lobsters, and Minecraft-inspired creatures such as the endergrade, soul vultures and mimicubes.

These new mobs can be found in the Overworld, the Nether, and the End, and each have their own set of unique behaviors. This mod is perfect if you're looking to enhance the vanilla experience, or if you are the type to collect and showcase as many mobs as possible in either a museum or a zoo.

9 Ice And Fire Dragons: Become A Witcher

  • Elemental dragons
  • Ghosts
  • Sirens

If you think vanilla Minecraft leaves more to be desired in the fantasy department, then look no further than this mod. Ice and Fire: Dragons, adds an exciting range of mythical creatures to the game. With mobs ranging in difficulty, this mod is great for more experienced players looking for a new adventure.

From naturally-occurring pixie villages to vast piles of loot hoarded away by dragons, there is so much to explore. You can even tame and ride dragons if you're brave enough.

8 Exotic Birds: Become An Ornithologist

  • 30 new birds
  • Bird nest storage
  • Bird egg management

Another mod that is great for enhancing the vanilla experience, Exotic Birds adds over 30 new birds, with each bird adding multiple species, bringing over 100 unique birds to the game in total.

Bird nests generate naturally atop trees in every biome and act as storage that can contain up to three eggs. Some eggs will be labelled as a specific species of bird, while others will be labelled as unidentified eggs which must be examined using an Egg Analyzer. Like normal chicken eggs, identified eggs can be thrown on the ground to hatch them, with the spawn chance listed as a percentage when hovering the cursor over an egg.

7 Lycanites Mobs: A Challenging Horror Game

  • New biome
  • 115 new creatures
  • New bosses

If you're looking for scarier, more powerful mobs in your Minecraft game, then Lycanites Mobs is the mod for you. Not only does this mod add over 115 new creatures to the game, with some acting as bosses with increasingly difficult stages, but the range and diversity of the mobs also create a new and interesting environment for the player to traverse.

From the huge, passive Arisaurs that resemble a grassy long-necked dinosaur, to the demonic Rahovart which, once summoned, harnesses hellfire and minion summoning abilities to create a multi-stage boss fight.

6 Mystical World: Adorable Unique Creatures

Mystical World only adds ten mobs, such as deer, enderminis, frogs, and silver foxes, and makes changes to the squid found in vanilla Minecraft, so this is one of the smaller mob-focused mods.

However, there's much more to Mystical World than mobs alone; by combining the new aubergine crop and a book, players can create the Encyclopaedia Mysticum to "guide you through strange creatures, delightful cuisine and the mystical treasures that you will come across!"

5 Rats: The Plague Is A New Threat

Ever wanted your own army of little helpers in Minecraft? Now you can have it, in the form of Rats. This mod, as you might have guessed, adds rats into the game, and a whole range of new features alongside them. Rats will naturally spawn in the dark and are afraid of players unless infected with the plague or tamed.

RELATED: Minecraft Mods Every Player Needs

Plague rats will automatically attack players and infect nearby rats, but once tamed they are immune to the effects of the disease. Rats can be used to hunt, gather, transport, fight, and help the player carry items. But beware, rats can burrow through dirt and wood and steal food and items directly from chests, so be careful with this mod or you might get more than you bargained for.

4 Better Animals Plus: Remastering Minecraft Mobs

  • Additional animal species
  • Retexture of Minecraft animals

Envisioned as a companion mod to Better Animal Models, but able to work as a standalone mod, Better Animals Plus not only retextures a lot of vanilla Minecraft animals but also adds in a whole lot more.

Most of the animals are based on real-world animals, from deer and turkeys to octopi and colossal squid. This mod adds more diversity to land, sea, and skies, and still retains that signature Minecraft style.

3 Animania Farm: A Farming Simulator For Minecraft

  • Adds more passive mobs mechanics
  • Realistic farming

Animania Farm is one of three Animania mods (excluding Animania Base, which is required to run the mods) that focuses on enhancing the player's experience with passive mobs, with this particular mod focusing on farm animals such as cows, sheep, chickens, pigs, and goats.

RELATED: Minecraft: Tips For Building Farms, Ranches, and Livestock Areas

Each type of animal comes in numerous species, which each have unique styles based on real-world breeds, such as the Hereford cow. This mod has also changed the way you can breed these animals, making the process more realistic with happiness affecting whether or not the animal will breed.

  • Additional animal species
  • Hamster and hamster ball

Animania Extra Animals adds hedgehogs, peacocks and peafowl, ferrets, hamsters, and three types of amphibians (frogs, dart frogs, toads) to the game. Both the peacocks/peafowl and amphibians cannot be tamed, but peafowls can be bred in the same way you would breed chickens with Animania Farm, using a nest.

Hedgehogs, ferrets and hamster can be tamed, however, they cannot be bred and must be obtained from their natural habitats. You can also craft a hamster ball and hamster wheel for your hamsters to use, with the hamster wheel even acting as a power source for many technology-based mods.

1 Animania Cats & Dogs: Your Pet In Minecraft

  • New cat and dog breeds
  • More pet options
  • Pet decor
  • Pet merchant

Animania Cats & Dogs is ideal for players looking to tame more realistic cats and dogs, with 13 dog breeds and seven cat breeds available, as well as more realistic foxes, wolves and ocelots.

These cats and dogs do not spawn naturally and can only be bought from a Pet Merchant, a type of villager that can spawn naturally within villages. There are also some functional and decorative blocks that come with this mod, such as cat and dog beds, pet bowls, dog houses, litter boxes, and cat trees. Everything you would need to create a pet's paradise.

If you’re a seasoned Minecraft veteran who’s looking for a challenge, Improved Mobs is definitely going to be a mod that you’ll enjoy using because it’s been designed for the sole purpose of making the in-game combat more difficult for the players. As the name suggests, the Improved Mobs mod focuses on the mobs of Minecraft, and its goal is to make various tweaks that make the mobs more challenging to go against. Vanilla mobs can be quite tedious to fight at first but, after a while, players just get used to fighting them, and there really isn’t any real challenge anymore. Fortunately, though, the Improved Mobs manages to keep things interesting by tweaking the mobs in various ways.

The Improved Mobs mod basically gives all Minecraft mobs various characteristics that make them feel like worthy foes rather than basic monsters that you can annihilate by repeating the same attack pattern over and over again. The mod allows mobs to spawn with armor, but the exact value of armor varies with each spawn so some can spawn with a pretty miniscule amount of armor whereas others can spawn with some insanely high armor values. The mod also gives all mobs the ability to break certain blocks as long as a few specific conditions are met and this gives the mobs a lot more maneuverability.

On top of all the other features, the Improved Mobs mod also makes it so that mobs can target villagers who have absolutely nothing to do with them, and that’ll make things a lot harder for you because you’ll also have to protect the villagers who are being attacked while simultaneously figuring out a way to take down the mobs attacking them. All said and done, though, Improved Mobs is a great mod that makes Minecraft feel more challenging and thrilling.

How to install Improved Mobs Mod?

  1. Download and install the recommended Minecraft Forge for your Minecraft version.
  2. Download the latest mod version for your Minecraft version.
  3. Put the .jar file into the mods folder of your Minecraft installation.

15 Best Mob-Related Mods For Minecraft

Oh, mobs. What would we do without you?

One moment you’ll be infuriating us with your dogged determination to kill us till we just turn off the game. On the other hand, the instant that you’re gone, we’ll whine that Minecraft is boring ‘cause there’s no one to slash swords at.

But such is the conundrum of the games we play with today. Let’s just face it: mobs exist in video games the same way that our superheroes fight against pasty underlings of the final bosses.

So since we can’t get rid of our beloved mobs, let’s mod them! Let’s mod the mobs!

I’ve searched around and curated the absolute best mob-related &mob-adjacent mods for all players.

15. Crocoducks

Crocoducks Minecraft Mod - Preview

A crocodile? A duck? Both?

Whatever they are, crocoducks are just some of the nastiest creatures you can encounter in Minecraft.

But they’re apparently friendly to chickens and vulnerable against ocelots somehow.

So if anything, crocoducks add a much-needed variety for dealing with mobs whenever you’re out in the game world. Maybe not a must-have, but certainly a “fun to have” mod.

14. Animal Crops

Animal Crops Mod for Minecraft

Check Out This Mod

The Animal Crops mod has long been one of the popular ones out there. Mostly because, as the name implies, you can cultivate and grow animals like you would with plants.

Weird, I know.

However, one lesser known use of this mod is that–surprise, surprise–you can even grow mobs on it!

You can do this by simply planting a spawn egg in the config file.

Best of all, you could even add third-party mod mobs (whew that’s a mouthful) in this pack! It’s both fun and convenient.

13. Quintessential Creatures

Quintessential Creatures Minecraft mod

Check Out This Mod

The Quintessential Creatures pack adds fun octopus and turtles in the mix. Because they’re… err, quintessential I guess?

Even without the additions above, this is worth downloading just for the addition of the troll.

While it’s a stone statue during daytime, the troll becomes alive by night to hunt. And throw rocks at you.

Because apparently, getting pelted with rocks in real life is awful enough. So someone might as well be doing it to me in-game.

12. Animania

Animania Minecraft mod

Check Out This Mod

Want to transform your Minecraft world into an animal utopia? Well I will admit that’s a weird goal, but you can do so with the Animania mod!

This mod lets you feed and take care of the animals everwhere.

If you’re consistent with it, then they get happier. You know, like taking care of an egg inside a Tamagotchi (yes I’m old).

However unlike Tamagotchi, if you neglect to take care of these animals, they don’t just die. Some of them might even attack you because of it.

But maybe that’s why mobs exist in the first place: because they just want to be understood. That makes sense right?

11. Mystical World

Mystical World Minecraft mod screenshot

Check Out This Mod

Now why is this mod called Mystical World, you ask? Well, beats me.

But as far as mob varieties go, there’s a ton going for it here: deer, stags, squids, and even silkworms and walking sprouts are just some of the creatures you might encounter.

True to form, each one has trait-specific drops that could help you in crafting custom items too.

One notable addition to the Nether area, though, is the lava cat.

It’s dangerous enough to simply encounter one. But if you can tame one, then it could provide a great defensive boost to your encounters.

Also getting a lava cat wet turns its body into obsidian, which means that its attacks hit foes like a truck!

Then again, there’s also the fact that you can just… you know, let it burn enemies. That’s fun too.

10. Pandora’s Creatures

Pandora’s Creatures Mods Minecraft

Check Out This Mod

Are seahorses and crabs part of the Pandora’s Box mythology? Or does it refer to Pandora, the planet?

Well whatever “Pandora” is, this mod set is surely beautiful thing of beauty.

The mobs you can expect here include an exclusive addition to The Nether, the Hellhound. It’s what it sounds like.

Plus the Arachnon, which lets you craft the special Arachnon Hammer upon killing it.

And a Bufflon, which is a buffalo-like mob that can be found in snowy fields and can even be tamed to be your companion in battle.

9. Mob Grinding Utils

Imagine making a mob farm run more like a “proper” farm.

You know, the kind where everything is industrialized and you can operate it efficiently like a business. A business of mobs.

Well if this is your new life goal since reading this article, the Mob Grinding Utils is the mod for you!

It lets players create more systematic ways to farm mobs, primarily thanks to its modular design. Create mobs based on how many exp and drops you need, and then scale it up man!

8. The Twilight Forest

The Twilight Forest Minecraft mods

Check Out This Mod

Similar to many of the Skyrim mods we’ve covered, I feel like The Twilight Forest is so different from vanilla Minecraft in almost every way.

This mod could serve as new games just on their own, honestly.

A completely unique addition to this mod are new dungeons that seem tailored for the hardcore roleplaying set, with each containing their own sets of bosses that require different strategies to beat them.

7. Primitive Mobs

Primitive Mobs in Minecraft

Check Out This Mod

Sometimes, gamers just need mobs the way we also need water and air to survive.

I know that not everyone agrees. Then again, would you really be reading this if you didn’t want more mobs?

Thankfully the Primitive Mobs add-on serves up a whopping 25 new mob variations into the base game. Not all of them are bad, either.

Good luck spotting which ones are good, though!

6. Lycanites Mobs

Lycanites Mobs for Minecraft

Check Out This Mod

So you want more mobs, but also want them vicious as well?

Well the Lycanites Mobs is probably the one you’re looking for.

Over a hundred mobs are scattered across each biome and dimension, and each one actually varies from the other one!

Along with facing off new creatures like the reptilian Makas and the shadow-based Grues, you can tame mounts like the Warg.

Imagine taming that thing and unleashing it upon anyone foolish enough to face off against you.

5. Mowzie’s Mobs

Mowzie's Mobs in Minecraft

Check Out This Mod

As far as enemy mob varieties go, Mowzie’s Mobs is certainly a fearsome mod to install.

You get scary-looking creatures like the Barakoa tribesmen, the massive Frostmaw guardian, the winged Naga serpents, and even the man-eating plant called the Foliaath!

Each creature boasts environment-themed designs and unique AI behaviors, so you really have to give kudos to Mowzie for making such a good effort on this mod set.

4. Progressive Bosses

Progressive Bosses Minecraft mod

Check Out This Mod

Are you ready for a much more challenging experience in Minecraft?

Well for roleplaying veterans who want to experience how a “scaling level” would work in the game, the Progressive Bosses mod is something to look into.

By killing the Wither, the spawning rate and frequencies increase for all players located within a 96- block radius.

If that’s not enough for you then killing the Ender Dragon increases not just the difficulty of killing its larvae, but also increases the health and damage dished out by the Ender Dragon for each respawn!

3. Ice and Fire: Dragons

Ice and Fire: Dragons Mod for Minecraft

Check Out This Mod

You know what makes battles more epic?

Dragons. Just a lot of fricken dragons.

Modders Raptorfarian and Alexthe666 have filled this niche for more fantasy-minded players with the Ice and Fire mod. And you can tell they put a lot of work into this.

The mod is exactly what you’d think: it features Fire Dragons, which obviously breathe fire and can be found randomly in the game world.

And Ice Dragons, which can be found in cold areas and will literally freeze you to death.

It’s not Skyrim. But it sure is close enough!

2. Champions

Champions Mod for Minecraft

Check Out This Mod

Bored of your garden-variety mob, are you?

Well the Champions mod should give you a right kick in the behind to zap away the bordem.

It’ll add dozens of elite-level mobs right into your game, fast!

Each set contains enhanced stats and more powerful abilities to give you that extra challenge you’re probably looking for. Even their ranks are extremely customizable!

Finally, something that’ worth going through a big challenge just to get that loot!

1. LotsOMobs

LotsOMobs Custom Mod for Minecraft

Check Out This Mod

What’s that, you want even more mobs? Well here you go, and you won’t want to look back!

LotsOMobs is a huge mod set that adds 25 new mob species to Minecraft.

You name it: birds, fish, snakes, lions, elephants, and many more are available here.

Heck, there are even specific dinosaur mobs like mammoths and pterosaurs. And you can even mount some of them from horses to camels!

These aren’t just mobs for the sake of having mobs. Each one has unique drops that you can use to craft custom items too.

Tiger fur as armor? Hey, with LotsOMobs anything is possible.
