You don’t need to do anything intense or anything fancy, simply do 5 to 10 minutes of exercises such as jogging, star jumps, heel kicks or skipping to get the blood pumping around your body.

Easy Yoga Poses for Two People

In this section we’ll cover some basic yoga poses that are suitable as either yoga poses for beginners, or, for more advanced yogis, as some warm up poses before moving onto the more difficult poses.

Yoga Poses for Beginners

1. Partner forward fold

How to do it:Stand next to each other shoulder to shoulder with your feet around hip width apart. Both plant your inside leg into the floor, spreading your toes and holding your weight through the whole of your foot. Next, slowly lift your other leg, bend at the knee and place the sole of your foot against either the side of your lower leg, or if you are comfortable with the balance, against the inside of your thigh. How to do it: Stand back to back with your partner with your feet hip width apart and then slowly walk out your feet a little and lean into your partners back for support. Slowly, squat down into a chair pose. You may need to adjust your feet further out so you can achieve the chair pose. Keep pushing against each other’s backs for stability. How to do it: Start off by facing each other in a standing position with your feet hip width apart. Inhale and extend your arms overhead, and then gently hinge forward at the hips until you meet hands with your partner. Once in this position, slowly begin to fold forward, bringing both of your elbows, forearms and hands so they rest against your partners. You need to rest equal weight against each other, pushing into the arms and hands so that your chest releases towards the ground.Hold for a few breaths, then slowly walk towards each other, bringing your torso upright and releasing your arms down.

How to do it:Partner 1 begins in the downward dog pose. Partner 2 then faces the same direction, places their hands in front of Partner 1’s, and slowly lifts up their legs and places their feet against the lower back of Partner 1. You can enter this pose by stepping your feet onto your partners back from the side, or by starting a short distance in front of your partner in down dog, stepping your feet onto the lower back of your partner and then walking your hands in while straightening your legs to create the down dog shape.

To do the modified version of this pose, Partner 1 starts in child's pose, and Partner 2 stands at an arms length distance away. Partner 1 then stretches their arms out and takes firm hold of Partner 2’s ankles. Partner 2 bends at the hips and places their hands against the back of Partner 1. Partner 2 should try to keep their legs as straight as possible to replicate the downward dog position.

Wheel

Benefits: This pose provides a deep back bend, and assists with flexibility in the hips and shoulders

How to do it:This one requires a little gymnastics! One person begins by laying on their stomach in the cobra position. The second partner has 2 options to enter the pose. They can either lay on their back, and the base partner reaches up one at a time and takes hold of their ankles. The top partner then bends their arms behind them, taking hold of their partners ankles, and pushes up through their arms (similar to pushing up into a single person wheel pose). For a more challenging entry, the base again begins in the cobra position, then reaches on hand up ready to catch the ankle of partner 2. This time partner 2 places their hands by the base partner’s ankles and pushes into a controlled handstand, lowering their legs down to meet the hands of the base partner.

Flying Bow

Benefits: This advanced pose improves lower body strength for the base person, while opening up the chest, lengthening the spine and releasing tension for the top person

Make this pose easier by doing half bow (keeping hold of each others hands for more stability)

How to do it: This pose can be achieved from the flying superman position. Once in the flying superman pose (see no. 16 below), the base takes firm hold of the top person’s shoulders to provide support while the top person bends one leg and reaches for their ankle, and then does the same on the other side whilst bending deeply into the back, to form the bow pose. If the top person remains stable and the base’s feet are positioned correctly, the base can then let go of the top person’s shoulders to create the flying bow look. Alternatively, you can modify the pose by keeping hold of each others hands for extra balance.

Flying Paschi

Benefits: This pose for 2 improves lower body and core strength for the base person, and stretches through the lower back and hamstrings for the top person

How to do it:The base person begins by lying flat on their back and placing the soles of their feet against the abdomen of their partner. You can hold hands while pushing up into the position to help with balance. The base pushes through their legs to straighten them, lifting up their partner who lays flat on their stomach. You can then let go of each other’s hands, the base placing them back by their side and the “superman” partner extending them out in front of them to help with balance and resemble the classic “superman” pose.

Flying Handstand Scorpion

Benefits: This yoga pose for 2 builds strength in your arms and core while opening your chest

How to do it: The base person lies flat on their back and places the soles of their feet on the lower back/glute area of the top person. The top person then raises their arms above their head and slowly begins to arch their back, aiming to place their hands on the abdomen of the base person. As they are arching backwards, the base simultaneously lifts and straightens their legs to bring the top person into the ‘flying’ position. The top person then bends into the scorpion pose, hooking their feet behind the legs of the base to keep the legs in position.

This pose requires a lot of balance and strength and should not be rushed. It may be easier for the top person to first get into flying camel pose, and then transition into the handstand scorpion.

Child&#;s Pose

Child’s Pose is a great way to begin or end a practice and it is your go to rest shape if you need to take a break mid class

Benefits: Child&#;s pose stretches your back and ankles and provides a moment to turn in. 

Tip: Rock your head side to side to get a calming massage on your forehead and warm up your neck muscles.

Modifications: If your knees are tender or if you feel stiff, put some padding under your knees. In addition, you can also put a pillow between your calf muscles and thighs. This will encourage more space. Another great modification you can do is to place a block under your forehead. What also works is a big pillow under the length of your torso so that you can rest your whole body and head on it. 

Keep in mind: If you have knee problems this may not be the shape for you. You can always sit meditatively or use downward-facing dog instead.

Downward-Facing Dog

This all over body stretch feels great on tight muscles.

Benefits: Downward-facing dog strengthens the arms, shoulders and back. Moreover, it stretches the hamstrings and calves. The bent knee version is a great way to relieve back pain too.

Tips: Focus on distributing the weight evenly through your palms. Lift your hips up and back away from your shoulders to pull the weight out of your wrists and shoulders. 

Modifications: You can do the pose with your elbows on the ground. You can also use blocks under your hands which takes the weight off your wrists.

Keep in mind: This pose is not recommended if you have carpal tunnel syndrome, or other wrist problems. Similarly, it&#;s also not recommended if you are in the late stages of pregnancy.

Plank Pose

Perhaps the best prep pose in yoga, but also a challenge by itself!

Benefits: This is a great shape to strengthen the entire body. Further, it can also be modified for wrist pain using your forearms and you still get the exact same benefits.

Tips: Pull (or wrap) all your muscles towards your center. Push the floor away with your hands (or forearms) and feet. Maintain a slight lift in your hips to avoid dipping down at the waist, which might strain your low back. 

Modifications: If you find yourself hunching forward through your shoulders, you can lower your knees to the ground. This will remove some of the weight from your upper body and back.

Keep in mind: If you have a sore low back or shoulders, lower your knees until your core is strong to support your back. 

Four Limbed StaffPose

This is the pause between plank and lying on the floor, often referred to as Chaturanga or low plank. It is also used as a transition instead of a hold, especially when first starting to build strength.

Benefits: This shape is incredibly strengthening for the whole body.

Tips: Keep your core engaged, your elbows tucked in towards your ribs. Keep your elbows back over your wrists as much as possible. 

Keep in mind: If your hips begin to sink, lower your knees to protect your lower back, shoulders, and wrists.

Mountain Pose

This may look simple but it is not just standing still. Mountain pose is the foundation of many other shapes. 

Benefits: This shape is about finding healthy posture. And having better posture boosts our confidence levels. In addition, it relieves aches and pains in the body from hunching forward over a desk, phone, or computer.

Tips: Imagine the top of your head lifting up to the sun like a blooming flower. 

Keep in mind: The adjustments in this shape are tiny. You’re not thrusting your hips forward or ramming your chin into your chest. The movements are very delicate.

Tree Pose 

This classic shape is simple and will strengthen the entire body. 

Benefits: Tree pose stretches the interior hip and works on calming the mind. All balancing shapes encourage core strength.

Tips: To stay balanced, firstly, fix your gaze on one unmoving object. Secondly, press your foot into your leg and your leg into your foot equally. Once you feel comfortable, press your raised knees back and raise your arms above your head.

Modifications: If holding your balance is challenging, start with your foot on your ankle instead of your calf muscle.

Keep in mind: You never want your foot to be on your knee joint. Certainly, pressing on your knee joint is both unsafe and unhealthy.

Warrior II

A powerful stance that stabilizes the mind and creates intention. 

Benefits: Warrior II strengthens the muscles around your knees and stretches the hamstrings. 

Tips: When looking at your back foot the arch should be in line with the heel of the front foot. 

Keep in mind: In Warrior II, you always want to be able to see your toes in front of your knees as this keeps your bent knee safe. 

Triangle Pose

A continuation of Warrior II that brings more focus on lengthening the body.

Benefits: Triangle is wonderful at strengthening the muscles of the back.

Tips: Let the movement come from your hips instead of your waist. You can do this by elongating your torso and pushing through both feet.

Modifications: Use a tall block under your lower hand to push the floor away. Lift your torso up until you are strong enough to hold it yourself. 

Keep in mind: Bend your knees gently to protect your hamstrings. Place your hands on your hips to help your back out.

Cobra Pose

Cobra is a great stretch from the hips all the way up to the chest. 

Benefits: Cobra will help stretch the entire front of the body. Similarly, it will stretch the abdominals and hips after a workout. It is also a great way to stretch the front of the chest and shoulders.

Tips: Stay low, you should be able to lift your hands off the floor and still keep your body lifted up. 

Modifications: Try to bring your feet together and spread them out to see which feels better on your back.

Keep in mind: The benefits are in stretching the font body, not stressing out the lower back. If your back is tender, choose child’s pose or downward facing dog instead. 

Bridge Pose

A wonderful shape to hold at the end of your practice to cool down.

Benefits: Use this shape to stretch your frontal hips, thighs and abdominal muscles. Bridge also strengthens the back muscles and hamstrings. 

Tips: To strengthen your hamstrings, put a block between your knees and hold it there. 

Modifications: Put a couple of blocks under your hips and rest to give your low back a  little extra support. 

Keep in mind: Your heels should line up, and they should be directly under your knees. This will help you make the most of the pose, and it will help you avoid injury. The best way to check is by doing the pose in front of a mirror and adjusting your body accordingly.

(Come to sit on your buttocks with a tall spine, lift up your legs, balance on your sitting bones, touch the soles of your feet together, and weave your arms under your legs.)

(Sit on your heels, with both hands in A-Okay sign over eyes to look like the badger’s eyes.)

Half Shoulder Stand:
Candle, Giraffe, Bat
(Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor, arms resting alongside your body, and chin tucked in. On an exhale, push your palms down and lift your legs straight up, making an L shape with your body. Stay in this position or squeeze your belly and raise your hips. Then, bend your elbows and place your palms on your lower back for a half shoulder stand. Pretend your feet are the flickering flames and your legs are the candlesticks.)
