Refrigerator: GE Monogram or SubZero?

I had SubZeros (36: all refrigerator and 36" all freezer) in my house. I bought the hype, and hated these boxes. Then, we had a house fire (no one injured) and I was very glad when the SubZeros were declared "totaled".

During the rebuild, I bought GE Monograms (36: all refrigerator and 36" all freezer) from Ferguson's in a package discount.

I also have a 30" 220VAC Advantium oven and a 1.4 meter French LaCanche range (gas top and electric ovens, one being convection). These are the two best appliances I have ever owned.

The separate refrigerator from the freezer accomplishes 99% of what "dual compressors/dual evaporators" in one box claim as benefits. The Monograms have magnetic door seals and the "nanotechnology" BS can be bought as a spray at AutoZone for about $15-30.

My Monograms are now 9 years old. The freezer probably needs a new defrost cycle timer, so I plan for a service call sometime in the fall. No hurry.

Never any food lost.

I would never own the brand plate called "SubZero" again.

Pro-Style Range Face-Off: Monogram vs. Viking

Viking has been making pro-style ranges for more than 30 years, and in that time, this appliance maker has become one of the most sought-after high-end range brands. Monogram has been making pro-style appliances for about the same amount of time, but it has never had quite the same cachet as Viking, perhaps in part because of its association with the mass-market GE brand.

To find out whether Monogram pro-style ranges are worthy rivals of Viking pro-style ranges, here we pit the Monogram ZGP304NRSS against the Viking VGIC53024BSS. These are both freestanding 30-inch gas ranges with beautiful industrial styling, high-Btu burners, and heavy-gauge construction. Prices are comparable: $4,500 for the Monogram and $4,300 for the Viking.

Monogram ZGP304NRSS:This Monogram pro-style range has four burners and a single oven. Among the burners, one is high-output, with a heat rating of 18,000 Btu, while the other three have a maximum output of 10,000 Btu. The range has continuous grates, so you can easily slide pans between burners, and a convection oven.

Viking VGIC53024BSS:This Viking pro-style range also has four burners and a single oven. All four burners are high-powered, with a rating of 15,000 Btu each. The Viking also has continuous grates across the cooktop and a convection oven.

Here’s how each of the two pro-style ranges performed in our extensive lab tests. CR members with digital access can read on for the blow-by-blow details of how these models perform across our rigorous series of lab tests, for everything from burner performance to baking evenness.

This article will provide you with an in-depth GE Monogram Refrigerator review. The GE Monogram Refrigerator is typically seen as a high-end refrigerator. GE first designed GE Monogram appliances as their top-of-the-line, premium line of refrigerators.

Due to its high-end design and affordable price tag, the GE Monogram Refrigerator is an excellent option for those looking for a sleek, clean refrigerator.

GE stands for General Electric. It is an international company that employs thousands. Monogram is one of four series of appliances. It is considered to be the best out of all the series.

  2. Achieve optimum temperatures in both the fresh food and freezer sections simultaneously.
  3. Keep internal temperatures constant despite large changes in room temperature. Temperature uniformity This performance test is based on how well a model minimizes warm and cold spots within its fresh food and freezer sections.

The Different GE Monogram Refrigerator Options

The Different GE Monogram Refrigerator Options

It might surprise you to discover the many types of GE Monogram refrigerators available. Below are just a few of the options. These are the best luxury brands you should consider for your dream kitchen.

If you are someone who doesn’t cook very often and typically buys frozen prepared foods, then you should consider a new refrigerator with easy access to the freezer as well as ample freezer space – possibly even a separate refrigerator and freezer.

What kind of style do you like? This is where GE Monogram refrigerators have a bit more flexibility.

Built-In GE Monogram Refrigerators

Side-by-Side – These 17 models are available in sizes 36″, 42″, and 48 inches. They can be used in any three lines (custom or integrated) with or without an indoor ice/water dispenser.

Only 11 models of these 17 models are Energy Star products. Refrigerators manufactured after April 28, 2008, earning this designation must be at least 20 percent more energy-efficient than the minimum federal standard.

Built-bottom Freezer – There are seven options available. They come in 36″ and 72″ sizes. It almost seems like there are only two of these counter-depth refrigerators. You can choose from stainless steel or add custom panels. These do not have an indoor water/ice dispenser.

The side doors are roomy for condiments, butter, salad dressings, etc. Although I can store soda cans on the bottom door shelf, I sometimes can’t view and tend to forget about the sodas because the shelf sits slightly behind the other door shelving.

The bottom freezer is divided into two large bins, an ice maker tray, and a pull out top-shelf. I find it very roomy.

Freezerless Refrigerators – All six models are available in 36-inch widths but can also be ordered in stainless steel and custom panel options. Panel Ready gives a personalized kitchen look that will customize your Monogram refrigerator with cabinet-compatible panels that blend in with the rest of your cabinets.

Freezers – The six models are similar to all the counter-depth refrigerator models, as most people put one on top of the other. All six models are 36 inches in length and come with stainless- or custom panel options. Also, when you pull the top rack out on the freezer, ice falls down the back and cannot be reached. The freezes make weird noises once the door closes. On the positive, it looks beautiful.

Free-Standing Refrigerators

Comparing the models: Although both are 36 inches wide, they have different cubic feet capacities (24.6 and 22.6). Both models are wrapped in stainless steel, and their dimensions are almost identical.

Bottom freezers: This model is only available in two models. There are only two models of bottom freezers: one is part of the Professional line, and the other is the Integrated line. This causes the handles to differ. One is 31 inches deep (Professional), while the other is 30% deep (Integrated).

Double-Drawer Refrigerators

Both models have a combined capacity of 5 cu. They are ideal for keeping fresh food readily available and measure five cu. They are pretty different in terms of aesthetics. Both are made with stainless steel, and one has a built-in look. This will require door panels and custom handles. The other is a bit deeper.

Adjustable, Spill-Proof Glass Shelves – makes it easy to customize storage to handle foods and containers of various sizes. Six Adjustable Door Bins – offers added storage flexibility.

GE Water Filtration System – delivers clean, great-tasting ice. The convenience of the milk on the door alarm and other bottles on the door shelves is convenient and gives more shelf storage in the refrigerator part.

Fresh Food Refrigerators

It is just another way to refer to a compact refrigerator. Each of the four models has a capacity of 5.4 cu. They all have a 5.4 cu. Ft capacity and work the same, the only difference being their looks.

Compact Refrigerator with Custom Panels: Both models can have custom panels. The one on the left opens, while the other opens to your right. One has a flush appearance, and the other opens to your right.

Stainless Steel Compact Refrigerator: There are only slight differences between these models. One door opens to the left, one to the right. This gives the refrigerator a flush appearance. It can either be built-in or freestanding.

Outdoor Refrigerators

These compact outdoor refrigerators look identical to stainless steel exteriors and have a capacity of 5.4 cu ft. You can open the door to either the left or right. Adjustable, Spill-Proof Glass Shelves – makes it easy to customize storage to handle foods and containers of various sizes.

Magnetic Door Seal System One-piece construction, extra-heavy insulation, and magnetic gaskets around every door lock in cold air. Interior LED Lighting See all your fresh foods more clearly and easily. LED lighting is also more energy-efficient – designed to last the life of your refrigerator.

Wine Reserve Refrigerators

All four of these refrigerators can hold up to 57 bottles of wine. The digital temperature display on the three models is visible upfront, while the other one is hidden.

Allows precise temperature settings and are positioned for maximum ease of use Humidity controlled vegetable compartments and sealed snack pans.

Other differences include the appearance of the doors: see-thru, reversible hinges, or on the proper only stainless steel or custom panel, and a 1/4″ height variance.

Bar Refrigerators with Ice Maker

These two models have the same capacity and are identical in size (23 3/4″ and 24 7/8″). Only the difference is that one model can have a custom panel added to it while the other has a stainless-steel look.

Ice Maker

This model is ideal for those who need ice. This product can produce 50 lbs of ice per day and has a 25 lb storage capacity.

The only difference between the three models made by GE service is that they are available in stainless, white, or black (the latter two can have custom panels attached) and that the stainless model weighs 7 lbs more. They are the same ice makers.

Beverage Centers

A beverage center is a small refrigerator with a transparent glass door. This will help you better understand what it looks like.

These four models are very similar to wine storage refrigerators’ breakdown in that three of them have an upfront digital display while the fourth is not.

Other differences include the appearance of the doors: see-thru, reversible hinges, or on the right only stainless or custom panels, and a 1/4″ height variance.

This list contains questions that can help you to figure it out.

Do you want a built-in refrigerator or a free-standing one?

This is often determined by the size of your kitchen’s opening. Freestanding refrigerators are 36 inches wide, while built-in GE Monogram refrigerators measure 72″ to 36″.

What type of refrigerator will you need?

Consider how you use your fridge. Do you enjoy cooking fresh food? You might consider a French door refrigerator or a bottom freezer model for quick access to fresh food. A refrigerator with easy access to the freezer and ample gallon storage space is a good choice for someone who does not cook often.

Some customers say:

I have had a Monogram 42″ side by side with custom panels since August 2002. I have had a few services calls over the years, almost all for problems caused by the ice door wearing out and not snapping shut which allows warm air into the freezer causing melt/freeze problems.

I think I had the coils cleaned once (maybe not) and it did crap out two years ago, but aside from replacing what was inside, it only cost me $600 to repair.

What kind of style do you like?

This is where GE refrigerators offer a little more flexibility. There are four options:

  • Integrated: This section of the GE Monogram Collection is made entirely from stainless steel. It covers the doors and wraps around the edges. Monogram’s signature handles are long, tubular handles that give a kitchen a simple yet elegant appearance.
  • Professional: This part of the collection can also be done in stainless steel. However, the most noticeable differences are in the louvered grill at the top and the hand-finished edges.
  • Custom: You can personalize these refrigerators by adding custom cabinet panels.
  • Freestanding: They can also be wrapped in stainless steel, adding elegance to any kitchen.

You should now answer the questions above to help you choose the refrigerator that suits your needs best. Besides that, brand-exclusive such as Twin Turbo Boost and Dry Boost with fan-assist ventilation ensure every load can skip the towel-drying, while the Piranha Hard Food Disposer pulverizes foods at 3,600 rotations per minute leaving wash water free of debris.

Depending on what appliance you choose, you could pay anywhere from $$$$ to $$$$. The prices depend on the appliance you buy, how large it is, and how many features it comes with.

You can buy these appliances from AjMadison, US Appliance, and GE Appliances. You can also use the Monogram website to find a local dealer.

How GE Monogram Compares To Other Brands

GE Monogram tends to be a couple thousand dollars cheaper than other brands. They also focus more on style than other brands. They offer WiFi built into most of their products, and some brands don’t offer that.

Some people are wary of this brand because it’s less knowable than others.

Pros And Cons Of GE Monogram

There are good and bad points about these different appliances.

  • Style
  • Design
  • Cheaper than other brands
  • Materials used
  • It’s easy to use
  • Easy to clean
  • Good customer service
  • Not a knowable brand
  • Could bake things a little faster than intended
  • Can be difficult to repair
  • Some people feel that the fridge didn’t have enough space

Give This Unknown Brand A Chance

While GE Monogram isn’t as well known as other brands, it creates quality products at decent prices. The fact that they care about style and function is good for those who are trying to create their dream kitchen.

You get plenty of options with subtle details that separate them.

The company takes great care into all the little details to ensure that every product they make works properly and smoothly.

No matter what, you should do your research. Compare GE Monogram to other brands. See what is good and bad about each of them. Think about what your needs are and which appliance answers these needs.

As always, make sure that you make a budget before looking at anything. How disappointing would it be to fall in love with something, only to find out its way out of your price range.

No matter what appliance you get, it’s a costly investment. So it’s worth taking the time to do the research and be sure that you know what you’re looking for.

Feedback regarding GE Monogram appliances?

We bought a luxury home in 2019. 16 years old and most of the kitchen appliances were Monogram. Fortunately, the home came with an appliance warranty.

The double wall oven was not reaching the correct temperatures, ruining meals. Warranty company was able to obtain a replacement model at wholesale.. so we got a new Monogram oven (retails for over $5,000) and spent $600 for my general contractor to modify kitchen cabinets to fit it.

In October, 2020 the oven starts falsely reporting that the doors are open (so it won’t operate) and lighting won’t go off. GE sends a repairman who decides the issue is a bad panel, so he orders a replacement.

We wait without our oven until mid January, for the replacement part to arrive and get installed.

Within a couple days, we are seeing the same issue, so we schedule another service call. 2 weeks later, tech comes to the home, tells us the issue was misdiagnosed.. It is a problem with a wire harness.. GE has published service bulletins. Of course this part is also back ordered.. so who knows how many more months we will be unable to use our oven.

Soon after that, the GE monogram built in microwave oven stopped working. Still waiting for warranty service. If it needs unavailable parts, it will be replaced .. but not with a Monogram product.

GE has the testicular fortitude (balls) to be trying to sell us an extension to the warranty for our new oven .. which they have not fixed for four months.

Finally!!! The NEW Monogram Pro Ranges are HERE! A brief look at the ZGP364NDTSS.

General Electric Company Monogram Series Consumer Reviews

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY -- I bought this G.E. Monogram built-in refrigerator 7 years ago, in 2008. From the very beginning it began to grow mold in a way I have never seen in any refrigerator. Every bottle and jar was dotted with black spots of mold. I constantly wiped everything down with Clorox wipes. When repairmen were here for other reasons I mentioned it and asked if there was some kind of setting that needed to be changed. They didn't know of any. In a couple years the mold situation was still out of control. I constantly had to clean it and asked again if there was a filter somewhere that had become contaminated and needed to be replaced, but was told no.

I eventually purchased all new door shelves, at a very heft cost of many hundreds of dollars -- I think about $350 - 400 -- because they had cracked and the cracks filled with mold and I could not get it clean. I have removed all the shelves and drawers many, many times. I've never had to do this with any other refrigerator. In addition the white painted metal is peeling off and rusting everywhere. Wherever the paint is chipped it rusts. The lower edges of every shelf bracket have rusted. This had happened within 2-3 years of purchase.

Also the drawer tracks are loose. I have to tighten the screws all the time, but they re-loosen. I store water and drinks in the drawers, as I'm sure many people do and they obviously were not made to hold any weight. After about 3 years the refrigerator started not functioning well in the summer. It will get warm at the top and the compressor ices up. One repairman replaced a thermostat. I think one put freon in. I've defrosted the compressor many, many, many times. Three times this year alone (middle of June). Once I lost a full refrigerator full of food because of the refrigerator not staying cold.

Now they want to put in a new compressor, which fortunately is under extended warranty, but we will still be paying labor. I think we've paid about $2,000 on parts and service for this unit, probably more. I'm incredibly frustrated that the repairmen do not know what is wrong with my refrigerator and never listen to me when I tell them what my concerns are.

Now I've learned that many people have had the exact same problems. Why doesn't the dealer know about this? Why haven't they told me when I have asked specifically about mold? This is by far the most expensive appliance I have ever purchased and the cost certainly makes the poor performance that much more infuriating.

The great thing about premium appliances is that not only do they look great, they also perform well. The start of better food preservation begins with these core refrigerator features from Monogram:

  • A full-width climate-control drawer provides multi-functional chill settings.
  • Showcase LED lighting brilliantly illuminates foods and the interior.
  • A sealed vegetable drawer helps retain the crispness and flavor of fresh produce.
  • Adjustable door bins allow you to stock foods your way.
  • Create more space on the main shelves with the gallon-size door bin.
  • Adjustable glass shelves look custom and provide optimum storage flexibility.

Additionally, select models feature TwinChill™ evaporators for independent climate control in the freezer and refrigerator, remote programming and management with SmartHQ™, and a Multi-shelf air tower for top-to-bottom temperature management.

GE Profile Refrigerators Overview

In most cases, the common refrigerator shopper isn’t looking for a built-in refrigerator – especially with the growing number of counter depth refrigerators on the market that provide a comparable look at a fraction of the price. Since GE Profile refrigerators come mainly in freestanding models, including counter depth options (and a few built-ins), the brand is a considerable resource for shoppers with mid-range budgets looking for a great value.

Of the lineup, most GE Profile refrigerators are 36-inch French door models, plus a modest suite of 36-inch Side by Side fridges. Both styles feature a large range of refrigerators with water dispensers, including models with a Keurig® K-Cup® brewing system built right in.

Perks like the integrated Keurig® dispenser are key indicators of the user GE Profile is designing for. Essentially, the GE Profile owner stays current with trends, but form and function must work in balance. GE Profile flexes this philosophy with these standard refrigerator features:

  • Showcase LED lighting for a high-end feel that also enhances usability.
  • The Turbo Cool setting uses intelligent design to keep internal temperatures at their optimum every time the appliance is opened.
  • Easy food organization is simple with a convertible QuickSpace shelf and adjustable glass shelves.

Special features on upgraded models range from built-in WiFi operation to TwinChill™ evaporators, FrostGuard technology, and a Door in Door with rotating bin design for even easier access to snacks and refrigerator essentials.

GE Profile vs Monogram Ranges

Monogram Ranges Overview

Head on shot of kitchen featuring Monogram pro range

Professional ranges provide users with three essential benefits: Superior heat control, more cooking functions, and greater overall power. But Monogram professional ranges come with a fourth factor – a gorgeous aesthetic and attention to detail. You can see it in the solid brass dials fitted with industry-exclusive custom color LED backlighting, as well as in the brass burners, reversible grates, and LCD touch controls.

Monogram provides ranges in all-gas and dual-fuel options complete with a rich series of cooktop configurations, such as:

  • 30-inch ranges with four burners
  • 36-inch ranges with six burners or four burners and a griddle
  • 48-inch ranges with four burners with a grill and griddle
  • 48-inch ranges with six burners and a griddle

Along with the assortment of cooking setups, Monogram displays an impressive variety of cooking functions in the oven and cooktop. Dual-stacked burners provide a multi-purpose cooking zone capable of going from high-heat output to gentle simmers. Each unit comes with a 21,000-BTU burner featuring TrueTemp™ technology that generates even heat, as well as a 23,000-BTU burner that brings water to a rapid boil and sears to professional finishes.

And since every main course deserves an outstanding presentation, every Monogram range oven includes convection cooking and Air Fry technology to deliver superior cooking results. Of course, no professional range would be complete without connected technology. Monogram premium ranges come with WiFi monitoring and programming courtesy of SmartHQ™, which can also be used to sync up compatible brand appliances for a completely connected experience.

GE Profile Ranges Overview

Considering GE Profile’s entry-level range comes with True Convection and no preheat Air Fry at a price around $1,199, it’s fair to say the lineup is a major bargain. And that’s without factoring in its wide catalog of drop-in, freestanding, slide-in, single oven, and double oven range models in gas, electric, induction, and dual fuel options. While not a splurge in the same way Monogram ranges are, GE Profile ranges are an excellent option for mid-end budgets and a strong contender for flexible buyers looking to stay in lower ball park.

While standard range features like steam clean, a self-clean options, and sealed burners might not be so glamorous, the lineup’s highlights are borderline buzzworthy. On top of the latest cooking functions mentioned, shoppers can find these exciting features across the GE Profile range collection:

  • With 21,000 BTUs of output, the Tri-ring burner is even comparable to Monogram.
  • Select GE Profile induction ranges come with a sous vide cooking option with precise heat application for perfectly cooked proteins and dishes.
  • Enjoy WiFi connectivity on a new level with In-Oven CookCam™ on GE Profile’s premium induction range model.

GE Profile vs Monogram Dishwashers

Monogram Dishwashers

If you want to think less about after-dinner cleanup, a high-performing dishwasher is crucial. Monogram makes that possible with luxury dish care from a roundup of high-end dishwashers. Across the brand’s lineup, exclusive features like an Advanced Wash System complete with over 90 jets and Max Dry provide complete dish care from start to finish.

Of course, having extra perks isn’t bad, either. That includes a hard food disposer, full-extension third rack, and WiFi connectivity, plus select models with LED interior lighting, dedicated bottle jets, and a Steam + Sani option. Each full-size Monogram dishwasher also provides up to 16 place settings and comes with silent operation from a high of 42 dBA down to 39 dBA.

GE Profile Dishwashers

If your modern home also comes with demands of a full house, GE Profile dishwashers were designed specifically for you. Available at a much more affordable price point with models starting at $1,049, the GE Profile Series dish care lineup comes with an impressive repertoire of features ready to handle everyday messes.

Brand exclusive such as Twin Turbo Boost and Dry Boost with fan-assist ventilation ensure every load can skip the towel-drying, while the Piranha Hard Food Disposer pulverizes foods at 3,600 rotations per minute leaving wash water free of debris. And since dish loading flexibility is essential for an efficient wash, you can also find a wide selection of dishwashers with a built-in third rack, bottle jets, and silverware jets, so every dish is washed to perfection.

Additionally, most of the dishwashers available from GE Profile are WiFi compatible and come with a noise rating of 45 to 39 dBA. For a complete wash experience, you can also find higher-end GE dishwashers with even more upgrades such as Wash Zones that can run just half a load, a 1-Hour Wash Cycle, and fold-down tines on upper and lower racks.
