Poems for Graduation

On graduation day, friends and family often turn to poetry to express what they would like to pass on to the next generation—a few lines of guidance, a gesture toward possibility. The familiar standards include Robert Frost’s "The Road Not Taken," Langston Hughes's "Dreams," and Rudyard Kipling’s "If—.” Contemporary poets, too have offered many strange, funny, and lovely alternatives to these well-known verses, addressing not only the excitement and beauty of graduation, but also the prospect of changes and new beginnings.

  8. A Letter For My Son

    • By Kelly
    • Published: May 2009

    Timothy,

    I remember taking you to kindergarten on the first day of school. We walked into the classroom and you just stood there, shy at first but then the teacher came over and introduced you to the others kids and you went off to play. I watched you for a few minutes to see how you would do and then you came up to me and said "Momma, you can leave now" and I just laughed and said "OK". I hugged you and said "I love you and that I'll be back soon to get you" and you said "OK, I love you too" and then went back to playing. I hated to leave you there but I knew you had to go. I really thought you would be crying like I seen some of the other kids doing, but you didn't. I was the one crying. I thought about you the whole time you were gone, just wondering what you were doing. When I came to get you, you were so excited and before you got in the car you were telling me all about your day. Your eyes were so bright and you were just filled with so much information, I swear you didn't stop talking until we got back into the house.

Graduation Prayer, The Lord Will Lead You

Now that you're celebrating
Your graduation day,
Your whole life is ahead of you,
And the Lord will lead the way.

Just trust in Him to guide you
In His divine and perfect will.
If you'll pray and read His Holy Word,
His plan you will fulfill.

Whatever happens in your life,
On the Lord you can depend.
There's nothing you can't handle
With Jesus as your best friend.

Congratulations, and may the Lord bless you always!

Christian Graduation Prayer

Dear Lord,
Today I bring this young graduate
before You asking You to keep Your
hand of protection upon her.

Please guide her steps in the days
ahead as she embarks on this new
journey before her. Grant her
wisdom to make wise decisions
according to Your will.

May the road before her be paved
with joyous opportunities that
bring honor and glory to You.

In the precious name of Jesus
I pray.
Amen

Graduation Poem, Dream Big

If there were ever a time to dare,
To make a difference
To embark on something worth doing
It is now.

Not for any grand cause, necessarily –
But for something that tugs at your heart
Something that is worth your aspiration
Something that is your dream.

You owe it to yourself
To make your days count.
Have fun.  Dig deep. Stretch.

Dream big.

Know, though,
That things worth doing
Seldom come easy,
There will be times when you want to
Turn around
Pack it up and call it quits
Those times tell you
That you are pushing yourself
And that you are not afraid to learn by trying.

Persist.

Because with an idea,
Determination and the right tools,
You can do great things.
Let your instincts, your intellect
And let your heart guide you.

Trust.

Believe in the incredible power
Of the human mind
Of doing something that makes a difference
Of working hard

Of laughing and hoping
Of lasting friends
Of all the things that will cross your path

Next year

The start of something new
Brings the hope of something great.
Anything is possible
There is only one you
And you will pass this way but once.

Do it right.

Graduation Poem, Dare to Believe

Everybody Knows:
You can't be all things to all people.
You can't do all things at once.
You can't do all things equally well.
You can't do all things better than everyone else.
Your humanity is showing just like everyone else's.

So:
You have to find out who you are, and be that.
You have to decide what comes first, and do that.
You have to discover your strengths, and use them.
You have to learn not to compete with others,
Because no one else is in the contest of *being you*.

Then:
You will have learned to accept your own uniqueness.
You will have learned to set priorities and make decisions.
You will have learned to live with your limitations.
You will have learned to give yourself the respect that is due.
And you'll be a most vital mortal.

Dare To Believe:
That you are a wonderful, unique person.
That you are a once-in-all-history event.
That it's more than a right, it's your duty, to be who you are.
That life is not a problem to solve, but a gift to cherish.
And you'll be able to stay one up on what used to get you down.

Graduation Poem, Anyway

People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable
Be frank and honest anyway.

People favor underdogs but will follow only top dogs.
Fight for some underdogs anyway.

People may need help, but may attack you if you help them.
Help people anyway.

What you spend your years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.
Give the world the best you have anyway.

~ Author Unknown

Be True To You

As you set out on life’s road
unsure of the path you’ll go,
the most important thing you can do
is to always be true to “you”

Always remember who you are
in moments of struggle or fear.
Never forget or give up on
the hopes and dreams you hold dear

There will be setbacks and rejection
and moments of failure too,
but you must overcome any frustration
to achieve the potential of you.

Don’t forget to smile, or laugh,
or to live in the present;
no matter where life takes you
make every memory pleasant.

As you travel along your journey,
know that you’re never alone
and I’ll always be here for you
should you need the comfort of home.

On Your Graduation Day

In your life there will be many a milestone
On which you will look back when the years have flown.
And of all those major moments, I think it's fair to say
That one of the most special is your Graduation Day.

As one era ends, you watch a new one start;
An adventure in which you are about to take part.
Let courage and joy conquer any fear or doubt;
Let hope light the path on which you're setting out.

At those times when you need guidance, as all of us do,
Look to family and friends, always there to counsel you.
And if a choice does not turn out quite as you planned,
Never be ashamed to seek a helping hand.

Despite the challenges with which your journey may be fraught,
Stay true to yourself and the values you've been taught.
And be mindful that no matter the things you may possess,
The good you do for others is the true gauge of success.

Congratulations!

Let No One Steal Your Dreams

Let no one steal your dreams
Let no one tear apart
The burning of ambition
That fires the drive inside your heart.

Let no one steal your dreams
Let no one tell you that you can't
Let no one hold you back
Let no one tell you that you won't.

Set your sights and keep them fixed
Set your sights on high
Let no one steal your dreams
Your only limit is the sky.

Let no one steal your dreams
Follow your heart
Follow your soul
For only when you follow them
Will you truly feel whole.

Set your sights and keep them fixed
Set your sights on high
Let no one steal your dreams
Your only limit is the sky.

~ Paul Cookson

Four Things

Four things a man must learn to do
If he would make his record true:
To think without confusion clearly;
To love his fellow men sincerely;
To act from honest motives purely;
To trust in God and Heaven securely.

~ Henry Van Dyke

SATs

SATs don't measure sports
SATs don't measure art,
SATs don't measure music.
Or the kindness in your heart.

SATs don't see your beauty,
SATs don't know your worth,
SATs don't see the reasons,
You were put upon this earth.

SATs don't see your magic,
How you make others smile,
SATs don't time how quickly,
You can run a mile.

SATs don't hear your laughter,
Or see you've come this far,
SATs are just a tiny glimpse,
Of who you really are.

So sitting at your table,
With a pencil and your test,
Remember SATs aren't who you are,
Remember you're the best!

~ Louise Regan

As you rush into real life,
remember to stop once in awhile
and just enjoy the moment.

High School Graduation Poems

Today's high school graduates deserve poetry on graduation that builds their confidence, like this free verse high school graduation poem does.

Just Keep Going

High school graduation
is a bigger achievement than ever before.
With so many giving up,
you are a winner who finishes.
Your diploma marks not an ending,
but the exciting beginning
of the rest of your dreams.
Just keep going;
you’ll get there.

By Joanna Fuchs

Inspirational graduation poems can reflect the challenge of separating from friends. Here's a high school graduation poem about friendship. This poetry about graduation could be a graduation goodbye poem.

Graduation Friendship

We’re graduating, and we know
Our lives will be different and new;
We’re going out into the world,
Our goals and dreams to pursue.

But one thing will never, ever change,
As we go our separate ways;
The friends we’ve made in school will be
Our friends for all our days.

The special ties and attachments we’ve made,
These bonds will never be broken;
We’ll continue to feel that special bond,
Though words may not be spoken.

So it’s not "goodbye," but rather "farewell;"
I’ll see you again, my friend.
Your friendship means a lot to me,
And it will never end.

Preschool Graduation Poems
Kindergarten Graduation Poems

Graduation poems are not just for older kids. This kindergarten graduation poem centers on the next school the graduate will attend. This could also be a preschool graduation poem.

The Next School

You did great work we're proud to say,
You did it, and you’re on your way.
The next school will be fun for you,
And it's something we know that you can do!

By Karl Fuchs

Graduation poems for tots should be written as simple graduation rhymes. This kindergarten graduation poem, with its simple graduation verse, could also be a preschool graduation poem.

Work Is Play

Everyone is proud of what you’ve done,
You’ve learned a lot and had some fun.
Now there's more school up ahead,
Just make your work seem like play instead.

And if you play the game that way,
How far you’ll go, no one can say.

By Karl Fuchs

This kindergarten graduation poem is a graduation congratulations poem that center on parents' pride in the little graduate's accomplishment. It could also be a preschool graduation poem.

You've Done Your Job

Now it's time to graduate
You did well, and that is great
You've done your job, and we're so proud,
We want to dance and shout out loud!

Graduation Songs

High School Graduation Songs

Please remember, the lyrics to the graduation songs below
are copyrighted, so use our Contact Form
to ask permission before you use it.

I’ve set my poetry about graduation to the lovely and easy-to-sing melody of "Morning Has Broken" to make it into a high school graduation song with lyric.

The melody to "Morning Has Broken" is in the public domain, BUT, the arrangements of it, that is, the harmony parts and accompaniment, are often copyrighted. If you can’t find an arrangement that isn’t copyrighted, you can sing the melody a cappella, or your music department can create an arrangement, or you can seek permission to use a copyrighted arrangement you find.

These graduation encouragement words are likely to prompt some tears.

Graduation Song

We’re graduating
Into our future,
Anticipating
Only the best.
Spreading our wings now,
We’ll do great things now,
Meet every challenge,
Pass every test.

We’ll overcome what-
ever life hands us,
Use what we learned here
For our success.
We’ll bloom wherever
Our journey lands us,
Reaching our goal of
Sweet happiness.

Friendships unbroken
Are what we made here;
Though words aren’t spoken,
Feelings are strong.
Memories we treasure
Tie us together,
Recalling pleasure
All our lives long.

We’re thankful for our
Good education;
Our school and teachers
Are second to none.
We'd like to give them
Appreciation;
We learned a lot, and
We thank everyone.

By Joanna Fuchs

Here's another high school graduation song.  The melody is in the public domain. A famous hymn lyric was set to this melody, so you can find the music in any Protestant hymnal. Look for the title, "Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing." This lyric is an inspirational graduation poem. It could also function as a graduation goodbye song.

We Are Graduating Now

We are graduating now, and
Things are coming to an end.
We appreciate our teachers,
And we’ll never lose a friend.
We will remember what we learned here;
We will remember everything.
And when we are gone from this place,
To our memories we’ll cling.

Education is the best thing
That we ever will possess.
We will use what our school taught us
To achieve our own success.
We are connected to our friends and school;
We are connected to it all.
When we think about our school days,
Only good things we’ll recall.

So goodbye now to our school days,
To the children we once were.
All the things we thought and did here
Will become a pleasant blur.
We say hello now to our future;
We say hello to what will be.
We all have what we all need; our
Education sets us free.

Preschool Or Kindergarten Graduation Song

And here’s a graduation poem  that could be a preschool graduation song or a kindergarten graduation song. This graduation poem is set to the melody of the song "The Farmer in the Dell." Where it says, "insert grade," put "kinder" (for kindergarten) or "first grade" or whatever applies.

Graduation Song for Young Children

We’re graduating now;
We’re graduating now;
We’re going to a (insert grade) class;
We’re graduating now.

We’ll learn some new things there;
We’ll learn some new things there;
We’re going to have a lot of fun;
We’ll learn some new things there.

We’ll meet and make good friends;
We’ll meet and make good friends;
We’ll like them, and they’ll like us, too;
We’ll meet and make good friends;

Our teacher will be nice;
Our teacher will be nice.
She’ll teach us what we need to know;
Our teacher will be nice.

We’re graduating now;
We’re graduating now;
We’re going to a (insert grade) class;
We’re graduating now.

More Poems About Graduation

Graduation poems can help graduates look inward to find the right path forward, as these graduation encouragement words do.

Foolproof Success

Dear Graduate,
You’ve done it!
You’ve gotten tangible proof
of your effort and intelligence
in your degree.

Now take a good look within yourself
to discover all your potential.
For foolproof success,
aim your strengths at compatible goals.

We can’t wait to see
what you will succeed at next!

Graduation Prayer

There are thousands of searches for graduation prayers, graduation blessings and Christian graduation poems, so I wrote this graduation prayer in the form of a free verse inspirational graduation poem. It is designed to be uplifting poetry about graduation.

Dear Lord,
Please bless these graduates
as they go out into the world
to make it a better place,
while they pursue their dreams.
Gently guide them, lead them,
show them Your way to success and happiness
through service to others,
as they maximize their own potential.
Fill them with joy when they reach their goals,
strengthen them as they deal with life's obstacles,
and show them that every challenge
is a path to character development.
Give them the intelligence
to make a plan for their futures.
Give them the patience and persistence
to pursue their ambitions.
Most of all, give them caring hearts
to look for ways to help the people they meet
on their life's journey.
Encourage them and lift them up now,
as they spread their wings
into a clear sky of limitless opportunity.
Let each and every graduate here
be wrapped in the warmth of Your infinite love,
and let Your wisdom show them the way
to make the most of their lives.
In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Poems for Sisters

Having a sister in your life can either be a wonderful or terrible experience, depending on your relationship. If you have an older sister and you are a girl, she can often show you how to navigate the way through some of the more difficult areas of growing up. This is also true if you are a boy. Your older sister can help explain to you how to interact with the opposite sex. Younger sisters are a joy as well. They often worship their older siblings and it can be a nice experience to be admired. Relationships with sisters, like any relationship depend on the people involved.
