American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis)

Description: American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) inhabit the southeastern United States. Once a federally listed endangered species, American alligators have recovered and are common in many areas of the Southeast. The species is still federally listed as threatened because it looks like the American crocodile, which is endangered.

Alligators are long-lived animals whose life spans can exceed 60 years. Alligators are cold-blooded, meaning that they are ectothermic animals that cannot regulate their own body temperature, but assume the temperatures of their surrounding environment. To warm themselves, alligators bask in the sun, which is when they are frequently observed on the banks of water bodies. On hot summer days they can sometimes be seen basking with their mouths open. This is a cooling mechanism essentially equivalent to a dog panting. Ecologically, alligators are important predators and create important habitat for other wildlife by digging holes that hold water during droughts.

Range and habitat: Alligators occur on the Atlantic Coast of North America from Florida through coastal North Carolina, and along the Gulf Coast into Texas. Alligators are restricted to the Coastal Plain, which includes the Central Savannah River Area of Georgia and South Carolina. In South Carolina, alligators have been recorded to reach lengths of more than 13 feet.

Alligators live in swampy areas, rivers, streams, lakes and ponds. Females and juveniles occasionally use seasonal wetlands, such as Carolina Bays. Although they are primarily freshwater animals, alligators will also venture into brackish salt water. On the Savannah River Site, alligators are abundant in the Savannah River, its swamp and tributaries, L-Lake, Par Pond and other reservoirs on the site.

Did you know?

  • Alligators and their relatives are the last of the living reptiles that were closely related to dinosaurs, and their closest modern kin are birds.
  • There is only one other alligator species, the Chinese alligator.
  • Alligators and crocodiles are related. However, alligators have rounded snouts, while most crocodile species have longer, pointed snouts. Also, crocodiles occur only in tropical and subtropical areas (only south Florida in the United States), while alligators live in somewhat colder climates.
  • Being ectotherms, alligators do not need to eat much a 100-lb dog will eat more in a year than an 800-lb alligator.
  • Alligators have fairly poor eyesight. They have a nictitating membrane to protect their eyes so that they can see underwater. Alligators hear with ears that are located behind their eyes and are very sensitive to vibrations in the water.

Juveniles also bask, but often in more protected areas with more dense vegetation.

When ponds begin to freeze, alligators will stick their snouts above water. The snout is frozen in place, but the animal can still breathe.

Reproduction: Alligators are active year-round, but they are most active in the warmer months in Georgia and South Carolina. With the start of their breeding season in May, males "bellow " to females and other males in the area. Alligator courtship is complex and involves a variety of vocalizations, head-slapping on the waters surface, body posturing, snout and back rubbing, bubble blowing, and pheromone (scent) signals. By June, pairs have mated, and females begin building mound nests out of marsh reeds or other vegetation. This rotting vegetation helps warm the eggs during incubation.

Sometime during late June to mid-July, females lay between 20 and 60 eggs. The hard-shelled, white eggs are about 3 inches long and resemble goose eggs. The mother defends the nest against predators throughout the incubation period, approximately 65 days. When the eggs are ready to hatch, the mother alligator digs into the nest mound, opens any eggs that have not hatched, and carries the young down to the water. Females sometimes aggressively defend their young for more than a year.

Mother alligators that are killed or removed from the area cannot defend their nests or young, and the hatchlings often are doomed. If the young escape predation and can find enough food, they may grow between 3 and 8 inches in length yearly. When they reach lengths of about 6 feet, they are considered adults.

Prey: Alligators are opportunistic feeders; adults eat fish, turtles, wading birds, snakes, frogs, small mammals and even smaller alligators they find near the shoreline of their habitat. Young alligators feed on small fish and aquatic invertebrates, but in turn, they can be food for raccoons, crabs, large snakes, turtles, various types of wading birds and even fish.

Research: Scientists at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory have studied American alligators on the Savannah River Site for more than 35 years. They have recorded population sizes, genetic patterns, distribution patterns and long-term population trends; animal sizes, sexes, activity periods, growth rates and reproductive efforts; diet, nutrition and energetics; responses to thermal effluent from reactors into cooling reservoirs; uptake of radionuclides; and the conservation of the species. Currently, SREL researchers work with alligators through long-term mark-recapture surveys, characterization of mating and paternity systems, and through studies on the effects of contaminants in long-lived reptiles.

eyes reflecting at night

Alligators are easily spotted at night by the shine of their eyes in the beam of a headlamp. For this reason, biologists often conduct nocturnal surveys.

Alligator Management in South Carolina: Alligators have a strong homing instinct; therefore, biologists have discovered that relocating individual alligators of concern is ineffective as they can return home even after they have been moved over 100 miles! Given this incredible ability to navigate, the SC Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has declared that alligator relocation is illegal in SC. Since relocation is not an option, when an alligator is removed, it is killed by a licensed alligator specialist.

In 1989, the SC DNR initiated a nuisance alligator program which permits contracted trappers to remove specific individuals that exhibit aggressive behaviors to humans or domestic animals, have become habituated to people (from feeding), show symptoms of debilitating illness or injury, or inhabit recreational waters intended primarily for swimming. Trappers remove 300-350 animals annually, most of them animals that have become habituated to humans because they have been fed.

In 2008, SC DNR established the alligator as a game animal and designated a hunting season. The season is regulated as a quota hunt and requires an application and permitting process. Hunters, who are only permitted for one season at a time, are only allowed to take one individual each year.

Conservation Challenges: Alligator populations are considered to have recovered from overharvesting pressures through supplemental farming practices and the reduced take of wild animals. However, alligators face plenty of challenges in our present-day landscapes. Expanding development in their habitat and the colonization of stormwater (freshwater catchment) lagoons along golf courses has forced an increase in interactions with resident humans. Since alligators cannot be relocated, all calls from property owners requesting removal result in the harvest of that animal. As human populations increase in these areas and tourism booms along coastal habitats, there are more and more situations where alligators are being fed and therefore, must ultimately be removed from the population. This situation is confounded by the fact that alligators have a bad (albeit biologically inaccurate) reputation from people misinterpreting the actual risk of alligator encounters.

Aside from problem interactions with humans, alligators are also experiencing direct habitat loss from development and the effects of pollution. Contaminants such as mercury and pharmaceuticals have led to decreased water quality and physiological effects in alligators exposed to these pollutants.

The future of the alligator lies in the hands of the people who live around alligators; their support is crucial in the development and implementation of long-term conservation and management of alligators and their habitats.

More information about alligators is available in the SREL Outreach Program Alligator Brochure.

LAKE MURRAY, SC (WIS) - Donna Faircloth says she found an alligator outside of her home near Lake Murray, and she hopes this recent discovery could prompt the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to see if there are more living there. .

Faircloth posted the photo with the alligator and a tape measure on Jan. 2. She found it in a koi pond on her property, which is not lakefront, but the lake is around them and lies about half to a quarter of a mile away from the lake at its closest point.

“I just fished this 30 inch (two-and-a-half foot alligator) out of my koi pond,” she wrote. “DNR says Lake Murray does not have alligators. So can anyone tell me where it came from if not Lake Murray 🤔 This just means he crawled through our lakefront neighbors yards to get to my koi pond.”

She said she first spotted the alligator when she went to her koi pond and found it dead.

“I got a fishing net and removed him from the pond and we measured it at 30 inches from tip of tail to [the] end of his snout,” Faircloth said. “I called DNR thinking that maybe they tracked alligator sightings in the area.”

She said after being bounced around the SCDNR offices to speak to someone, she discussed the size and was told to bury it. If it was larger, she was told that someone would come and pick it up.

"I said ‘does this mean we have alligators in Lake Murray,’ and the response was, ‘No, Lake Murray is too cold for alligators.’”

After debate continued on her post, she later updated her post saying that it was confirmed that it was an alligator and it would be approximately four years old.

Faircloth said she’s not sure what happened to the alligator, but it may have something to do with the koi pond’s set-up.

“We have five acres, some wooded, some landscaped, the pond is in the backyard next to the house,” she explained. “It was originally a swimming pool which we converted into a koi pond. The sides are vertical which prevented him from climbing out.”

Many commenters on her post insist that it may have formerly been someone’s pet let go at the lake. But it continues the long-debated narrative of alligators and Lake Murray.

According to the SCDNR website, the American alligator, or Alligator mississippiensis, is the only crocodilian native in the Palmetto State. The alligator population has thrived in South Carolina in recent years - so much so, that a hunting season was instituted in 2008.

The SCDRN website says that the American alligator can grow to be 13 feet and can live to be older than 60 years old.

Lake Hartwell tops list of deadly Upstate lakes by a landslide

LAKE HARTWELL, SC (WSPA) – On the weekends in the summer there are thousands of people utilizing the waters across South Carolina, but in the Upstate there’s one lake that claims more lives than the others.

Since 1993, the Corps of Engineers report 111 people lost their lives on the waters of Lake Hartwell with the most recent fatality on Sunday in Georgia. When compared to the Duke Energy records that only go back to 1998, Lake Keowee had 36 fatalities and Jocassee had four, Hartwell is the deadliest.

While no death is the same, DNR officials tell 7News most the people who use Hartwell are just there for the day so they aren’t always familiar with the lake hazards or know their limits around water.

“Anderson County has 30 different boat ramps in addition to the boat parks and places where people go swimming so I think Hartwell provides more access to the average recreating person and with more access comes more people and with more people come more fatalities,” said Lance Corporal Shawn Hanna with SCDNR.

The statistics show that these water deaths range from drownings to boating accidents, but Hanna said he’s yet to see one that wasn’t preventable by at least one factor and more often than not it’s having a life jacket.

At all three lakes, there are free stations with life jackets for swimmers and boaters to use throughout the day and return to help people stay safe while having fun.

As for where Lake Hartwell stands when looking across the state, Hanna tells 7News Hartwell and Lake Murray in Columbia on average lead the state in water related fatalities.

Why Deadly Alligator Attacks Like South Carolina Are a Growing Trend

The death of Cassandra Cline, a 45-year-old elementary school teacher, who was killed by a 9-foot alligator while protecting her dog on Hilton Head Island Monday made headlines around the world.

Fatal alligator attacks are rare – rare enough that they attract a lot of attention when they happen. But dangerous human-gator interactions are starting to happen more frequently because people are moving deeper into alligators’ habitat, says University of Florida professor Frank Mazzotti.

“People building homes where alligators live have caused the increase in attacks,” Mazzotti, a wildlife expert with the University of Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, tells TIME.

Cline was walking her dog alongside a lagoon adjacent to the Sea Pines Resort golf course when she was attacked about 9:30 a.m. Sea Pine, a 5,200-square-foot gated community, was built in 1957 and is located at the southern tip of Hilton Head Island.

Florida, which has the most human-alligator interactions, has recorded 24 deadly alligator attacks since 1948 – but 14 of those have occurred in the last 20 years, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission data. There were an average of about 10 alligator bites a year in the 2010s, compared with an average of eight a year in the 1980s.

The last reported case of a fatal alligator attack in the U.S was in June. Shizuka Matsuki, 47, was last seen walking her two dogs in South Florida before her body was found miles away in a lake in Davie, Florida. Before that, Bonnie Walker, 90, wandered off her senior living center and was killed in an attack in Charleston, South Carolina in 2016.

Despite what seems to be increasing frequency, Mazzotti says attacks are still remarkably rare, considering the number of alligators in southeastern U.S. There are an estimated 100,000 alligators in South Carolina alone.

“Alligators do not have an instinct to attack humans,” he says.

In many instances, there are several of factors that contribute to an alligator attack. Mazzotti says he believes a major factor in Cline’s death was her dog, which alligators perceive as food.

“A good comparison would be that a dog is like what a bowl of pasta or chicken is to a human, when an alligator sees a dog they see their next meal,” he says. “When nuisance trappers go into an area with gators they’ll often play a recording of a dog barking and the gators will come and investigate.”

Mazzotti says people need to be aware of their surrounding when they are near water or in areas where they have been alligator sightings.

He adds: “Don’t let your dog run free. Treat your dog like you would treat your child.”

But, there’s a caveat. If a person is in the unfortunate situation where an alligator attacks a pet, Mazzotti says it’s best not to get in the alligator’s way.

His recommendation for anyone who does get attacked by an alligator: “Fight like your life depends on it.”

“Poke the gator in the eyes and try to ram your hand down its throat,” he advises. “Alligators will often reposition its bite, take advantage of that to get away. Also make yourself appear as big as possible, the bigger you appear, the less likely the gator is to engage.”

Attacked by Alligator! (WARNING: Parental Advisory)

Once I put her on her stomach and, inserting a finger into her ass, began to jerk her off. She bit her pillow and moaned softly. Snezhana is actually quite passive in bed. I'm not even sure that she ends up, I don't know about this time either, but I still have the desire to fuck her in her big ass.

(and she is a chubby girl).

Now discussing:

Magnus. Has never seen her until today. As Laura said, Stina did not go to their college, she did not care about her education at all, having rich parents. Bertha, Laura's best friend and the biggest gossip in college, blood stain. She herself lay with her head turned to the wall and cried, twitching her shoulders.
