How to update Kodi on Amazon Fire TV Stick

The Amazon Fire TV Stick has become one of the most popular devices on which to install Kodi, the free and open-source home theater app. Unfortunately, Kodi is still not available in the Amazon App Store for Fire TV, so it must be installed using third-party tools and the official Kodi APK file. That means Kodi can’t receive important updates to its features, functions, and security.

In this article, we’ll show you how to update Kodi on a Fire TV Stick the easy way. If you’ve not done so already, check out our tutorial on how to install Kodi on a Fire TV Stick. Then we’ll show you how to update Kodi along with any repositories and addons you have installed.

Before you start, get a VPN

We recommend all Kodi users employ a VPN in order to protect themselves from threats posed by Kodi add-ons, both official and unofficial. By encrypting all of your Fire TV Stick’s internet traffic and routing it through an intermediary server, hackers won’t be able to decipher your online activity or identify your real IP address and location. Many VPNs automatically filter out malware as well. VPNs are also useful for unblocking geo-locked content that’s normally only available to viewers from a specific country.

Our top recommendation is IPVanish, a VPN with a huge global network of servers and enough bandwidth to handle both HD on-demand and live streams with minimal buffering. IPVanish is a no-logs provider that uses military-grade encryption to keep your data safe while in transit. It is easy to install this VPN on a Firestick or Fire TV.

Save 60%: Our readers can get an exclusive discount of up to 60 percent on IPVanish plans, including a 7-day risk-free trial.

How to update Kodi 16 Jarvis to Kodi 17 Krypton on Fire TV

If you’re updating Kodi to a whole new version, such as from Krypton (Kodi version 16) to Krypton (Kodi version 17), we recommend you completely uninstall your old version of Kodi before upgrading. Treat different major software versions like whole new apps. You’ll also want to get rid of any old skins and custom Kodi builds. Failing to uninstall the old version of Kodi can lead to dependency errors, crashes, and other issues due to incompatibility.

Unfortunately, performing a clean install means you’ll also have to reinstall all of your repositories and add-ons. These major software version updates don’t occur that often, so it’s not something you’ll need to do regularly.

To update Kodi from Kodi 16 Jarvis to Kodi 17 Krypton on Fire TV, follow these instructions:

  1. If you’re using a skin on Kodi, switch it back to the default skin, Confluence. Do this by going to Settings > Appearance > Skin. Select your skin name and switch it to Confluence.
  2. Uninstall the old version of Kodi. From the Fire TV Home screen, go to Settings > Applications > Manage installed applications
  3. Scroll down to and select Kodikodi fire tv stick uninstall
  4. Select Uninstall, and then Uninstall again to confirm
  5. If you haven’t already, download and install the Downloader app. You can find it by using the search function on the Fire TV home screen. It has a bright orange logo.fire tv downloader
  6. Type the following URL into Downloader to get the latest version of Kodi: https://www.comparitech.com/go/latest-kodi/
  7. Once the download finishes, you’ll be prompted to install Kodi. Read the permissions and click Installkodi fire tv stick 1

The link we provide (https://www.comparitech.com/go/latest-kodi/) is a redirect URL that always points to the latest stable version of Kodi compatible with Fire TV. For convenience, it’s much easier to type in that URL than the official one on the Kodi website, but it leads to the same APK file.

How to update Kodi for minor updates and patches on a Fire TV Stick

If you’re updating Kodi within the same major software version number, there’s no need to uninstall the old versiond first. For example, when updating from Krypton version 17.3 to 17.5, a clean install is not necessary. We always recommend using the latest stable version of Kodi. Even though these are technically only minor updates and patches, they often contain important security improvements and bug fixes.

To update Kodi within the same major software version, follow these instructions:

  1. If you’re using a skin on Kodi, switch it back to the default skin, Confluence. Do this by going to Settings > Appearance > Skin. Click your skin name and switch it to Confluence.
  2. If you haven’t already, download and install the Downloader app. You can find it by using the search function on the Fire TV home screen. It has a bright orange logo.Fire Stick Downloader
  3. Type the following URL into Downloader to get the latest version of Kodi: https://www.comparitech.com/go/latest-kodi/kodi fire tv stick 3
  4. Once the download finishes, you’ll be prompted to install Kodi. Read the permissions and click Install

How to update Kodi repositories on a Fire TV Stick

Keeping Kodi up to date is a healthy practice, but don’t neglect your repos and addons. Most of us don’t just use stock Kodi and addons from the official repo, so it’s important to stay on top of updates for those as well.

Failing to update your repos can result in dependency errors and can in turn prevent your addons from updating properly. To update a Kodi repo, follow these instructions:

  1. From the Kodi home screen, go to Add-ons > Install from repository
  2. Long-press the repository that the add-on in question came from and select InformationKodinerd's repo
  3. Select Update and choose the latest version

Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. Neither the Kodi Foundation nor Comparitech advocates the use of Kodi for piracy.

How to update Kodi addons on Fire TV Stick

Keeping your addons up to date ensures you’re getting the best sources, latest features, and optimum security. Updating addons is a simple task in Kodi:

  1. From the Kodi home screen, go to Add-ons
  2. Long-press the add-on in question and select InformationPS Vue Kodi addon
  3. Select Update and choose the latest stable version

Be wary of automatically updating addons. There have been instances in the past of addon maintainers introducing malicious code through updates. This code could run in the background to mine cryptocurrencies for a third party, steal your login credentials, keep logs of your viewing activity, add your device to a botnet, and/or run malware, adware, and spyware. Even if it’s not intentional, addon updates can create new attack vectors for hackers by inadvertently opening up new security vulnerabilities. Always use a VPN!

Kodi 17.1 on FireStick: How To UPGRADE & INSTALL

Updated Wednesday October 13, 2021.  This guide shows you how to Install Kodi 17.1 on FireStick or how to Upgrade Kodi FireStick to version 17.1.

Kodi 17 Release Date:  Kodi 17.1 was released April 2nd, 2017.  Previously, Kodi 17.0 was released February 5th, 2017.

  • Upgrading to Kodi 17.1 from a previous Kodi version is now mandatory.  Why?  Because streaming sources are moving to HTTPS, which is only supported by Kodi 17.1 + future versions.

To install the new Kodi 17.1 version, just install the free “Downloader” App on your Amazon FireStick.  Then use Downloader app to download the Kodi 17.1 apk file.

  1. Go to the FireStick / Fire TV Home screen.  Do this by pressing the Home (house icon) button on the FireTV remote.
  2. Then Enable ADB Debugging on your Fire TV.  Do this by going to the System / Settings area.  After you’re there, turn ON ADB Debugging.  Also enable Apps From Unknown Sources. Kodi needs both of these options turned on to install Kodi 17.1 on FireStick.
  3. Now go back to the Fire TV homescreen
  4. Find and then select Search
  5. Enter the word “Downloader“ into the Search box
  6. Select the word “Downloader” to search for the Downloader app
  7. In the results, choose “Apps & Games” (if necessary; for the newer version of Amazon Fire OS for Fire TV boxes)
  8. Now choose “Download” or Install or “OK”
  9. Wait up to a minute for the Kodi Downloader app to finish installing
  10. Then choose OPEN
  11. After the Downloader app is launched, Enter “http://bit.ly/kodi173arm” without the quotes to download and install Kodi 17.1 on FireStick.
    • The link above is the short link to download Kodi 17.1 (“Krypton”) APK file for Android & Fire TV / FireStick.
    • Or, install (the “older”) Kodi 16.1 Jarvis instead of Kodi 17 Krypton: Just enter “http://bit.ly/kodi161arm“.
  12. Then choose “DOWNLOAD”
  13. Wait up to a minute for the Kodi download to finish.  If the Kodi installer doesn’t start, choose “Open App”.
  14. Once the Kodi installer file launches, the FireStick / FireTV asks if you want to “Cancel” or “Install”.  Choose “Install“.
  15. Wait once more, this time actually finish the install Kodi 17.1 on FireStick process..
  16. Once Kodi installs, choose “Open App”.
  17. Now you need toinstall TV Addons and protect your Kodi streams (use our exclusive Coupon Code FIRETV25 to take a total of 60% Off a 1 Year VPN Subscription)

Why is this important?  The last step of the process above is important for two reasons:

Google trackers are lurking on 75% of websites. Cover your tracks to protect yourself.

  1. Because this step protects your data by using a secure VPN.  Our tutorial video (links below) show you how to protect your streams by using automated securities features that are seamlessly built into the VPN I prefer.
  2. The last step above also shows you how to install TV Addons in Kodi 17.1.  Kodi does not come with content pre-loaded.  To get streaming content, you must install TV Addons or other Kodi plugins.  We cover that entire process below. Use my Kodi VPN YouTube video to set this up in just a few minutes on FireStick, Android, iPhone, PC or any other device.
  • Some users see an error when they start Kodi for the first time.  If you see a “Cannot download OBB“ error message, then re-launch Kodi until the error Cannot Download OBB error message goes away.

We hope you enjoy the improvements and power of Kodi 17.1 Official Release on your FireStick or Fire TV! (We also have download links for Kodi 16.1 Jarvis and Kodi 17.0 Krypton * Note: * Kodi 17.0 no longer works – you must update to 17.1 using the Steps at the top of this page.)

The video below shows you what to do after you install Kodi 17 FireStick.  These instructions also work for Amazon Fire TV, Android TV Box, or literally any device with Kodi installed (because Kodi is the same on all operating systems, or “cross-platform”):

How to update Kodi on FireStick – and everything else you need to know

metro illustrations

Kodi has released an updated version of its popular open-source app to fix a number of bugs and security issues.

The makers said the latest update – Kodi 17.3 – has some important fixes after cyber security firm Check Point claimed hackers could easily gain access to people’s computers and devices using the Kodi app.

Kodi 17.3 now includes a patch to prevent malicious zip files from infecting and harming people’s devices and media players, its makers added.

Kodi wrote in a statement: ‘Our developers fixed this secuity gap and have added the fix to this v17.2 release. As such we highly encourage all users to install this latest version!

‘Any previous Kodi version will not get any security patch. We have began the roll out of this version and Android Play Store as well as Windows Store have this update pending and will roll out as soon as possible.’

Here is how to download the new version as well as a little more information about Kodi and FireStick.

What is Kodi?

Okay, back to basics. Kodi is an app designed to allow users to stream films, shows, games and programmes free of charge.

It’s an open-source bit of software that was originally designed for Xbox but has gone on to grow from there. It is owned by the not for profit organisation XBMC Foundation.

It can be live-streamed on Amazon Fire TV Stick.

What is the FireStick?

FireStick looks a bit like a flash drive.

It can plug into the HDMI port of a television to enable the television to stream content over wifi. This might include Netflix, YouTube, HBO Go and others.

You can get them on Amazon here.

Why is Kodi controversial?

There’s a recent legal case where a trader in Middlesborough was found guilty of selling ‘fully-loaded’ TV boxes modified to allow any user to gain access to paid-for television services for free.

The trader was ordered to pay £250,000 after selling the boxes to bars and pubs.

However the software itself isn’t illegal nor are the boxes – the trader was only prosecuted as his boxes were ‘fully loaded’ with plug ins and add ons that allowed access to pirated television shows and this is in breach of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

Installing Kodi on your Firestick is perfectly legal as long as you are not downloading any pirated content or paid-for subscription content, according to The Daily Mirror.

How to update Kodi on FireStick

1) Go to the HOME screen on your FireStick device

2) Enable ADB debugging through SYSTEM / SETTINGS

3) Go to SEARCH on the FireStick HOME screen and type ‘DOWNLOADER’ to search for the downloader app

4) Select ‘APPS AND GAMES’ in the search results and click to download and install

5) After it is installed, open the app and tap in http://bit.ly/kodi173arm then download it

6) If the downloader app doesn’t open the file automatically, click OPEN FILE to open the file and select install

7) Click OPEN APP to open and start Kodi

Update kodi 2017 firestick

Kodi not working on your Firestick? Try these easy fixes

kodi not working on your firestick - try these easy fixes

The Amazon Fire TV Stick has quite possibly become the most popular device for Kodi users. Fire Sticks are cheap, reasonably powerful, easy to set up and use and make Kodi installation easy. But when it comes to Kodi, you’re not likely to get any help from Amazon support if you encounter issues. And because Kodi is a free and open-source project, the team behind the software doesn’t have the resources to dedicate to a full-time customer service desk.

Troubleshooting Kodi can be difficult because problems can occur at one of several different layers. It’s up to you to identify whether the issue is caused by your network, the Fire TV Stick, the Kodi app, the add-on you’re trying to use, or the source that the add-on is trying to stream from.

In this article, we’ll cover some of the common problems Kodi users encounter on their Amazon Fire TV Sticks and how to fix them. All advice is for Kodi 19 Matrix but you might find it works on other versions too. If you use Kodi but not Fire TV, check out our article on more general Kodi problems and fixes.

Troubleshoot first

No matter what problem you may be encountering with Kodi, the first step is to troubleshoot and find where it’s coming from. We need to identify the scope of the problem, i.e., whether it’s limited to a specific addon, the Kodi app, the Fire TV Stick, or your internet connection.

  1. Check your internet connection. Open the Fire TV’s wifi-menu to make sure you’re connected to the internet.
  2. Try a different streaming app like Youtube to see whether the issue is limited to Kodi.
  3. Try streaming from a different addon.
  4. Connect to a VPN to check whether your internet service provider is blocking Kodi sources. We recommend IPVanish.

IPVanish is a VPN that not only helps you troubleshoot problems but can protect your private information and your Fire TV Stick from hackers and snoopers. A VPN encrypts all of a device’s internet traffic and routes it through an intermediary server in a location of your choosing. This prevents your ISP and anyone else from being able to discriminate against specific apps and sources by selectively throttling bandwidth.

We advise readers to use a VPN any time they use Kodi. IPVanish provides the speed and stability necessary to ensure a high-quality stream with minimal buffering.

BEST VPN FOR Kodi & Fire TV Stick Users:IPVanish is our top choice. Has a large uncongested network of servers and achieves good speeds. Strong security and privacy features make IPVanish a favorite for Kodi and Amazon Fire TV Stick users. Try it risk-free with the 30-day money-back guarantee.

Universal fix: Uninstall, reinstall, and update

A lot of Kodi issues can be solved using a primitive but effective method: uninstall and reinstall. If it’s a particular addon you’re struggling with, just uninstall and reinstall that addon. If it’s a Kodi-wide issue, then completely uninstall and reinstall Kodi.

Don’t forget to update your addons and repositories as well. An out-of-date repo or addon can cause dependency errors and other problems. We’ll assume you know how to install repos and addons, but we’ll show you how to update or remove them.

To update or remove a Kodi repository:

  1. Go to Add-ons (just scroll down to it in the left sidebar, don’t click on it)
  2. Select Install from repository
  3. Long press the repo you want to update or remove and select Information from the context menukodi repo information
  4. Select Update or Uninstallkodi noobs and nerds

To update or remove addons:

  1. Go to Add-ons
  2. Long press the addon you want to update and select Information from the context menu.kodi information
  3. Select Update or Uninstallkodi update bbc iplayer www

Black screen or app crashes on launch

Problem: Upon launch, Kodi either loads a blank black screen or instantly terminates and goes back to the Fire TV home screen.

Solution: This bug often occurs when the app cache is too full for Kodi to run.

Here’s how to fix a black screen or app crash on Kodi launch:

  1. Hold down the Home key on your Fire TV remote
  2. Go to Settings > Applications > Manage installed applications
  3. Select Kodi
  4. Select Force stop, then Clear cache
  5. Back out to the home screen and launch Kodi again

You will see the “Preparing for first launch” message due to the cache just being cleared, and Kodi should then run normally. If this doesn’t work, skip down to this section and try removing the database file specified.

Disable hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration is a main cause of Kodi crashes, particularly on Android. You can try turning it off to see if the issue goes away. From the Kodi home screen, click the gear icon to go to the settings menu.

Disable Kodi hardware acceleration

Next, select Player settings. At the bottom of the page is another gear icon with the word “Basic” next to it. Click this three times and “Basic” should become “Expert”. Highlight the Video tab, scroll down to the bottom of the list on the right, and disable the Allow hardware acceleration – DXVA2 option. Restart Kodi.

After an update…

If you get this issue after updating to the latest version of Kodi, the problem might be related to the Addons.db file. The solution is to delete that file. Doing so will not delete your addons.

On Fire TV Stick, you’ll have to download an app to navigate your system files. We recommend ES File Explorer, which is available from the default Amazon app store that comes with Firestick. Open that app and navigate to Android/data/orgkodi/files/.kodi/userdata/Database. Then delete the Addons.db file.

No stream available

Problem: When attempting to stream a video on Kodi, you repeatedly get the “no stream available” error.

Solution: Assuming you’ve gone through our troubleshooting steps, this problem occurs when Kodi is for some reason unable to locate sources from which to stream a video. Unfortunately, it’s not a very specific error. Not only could the addon in question be causing the problem, but another addon could also be a factor as well.

There is a chance that the addon is no longer supported by the repository where you originally got it, in which case you’ll need to find it elsewhere. For example, the TVAddons repository and many others have previously gone offline or changed location due to legal issues. Although the repository came back, it’s now under a new web address, so the addons you installed from the old repository may no longer work.

Once you’ve confirmed the problem is within Kodi and the repo and addon are still being maintained, try updating Kodi, repositories, and the addon itself. To update Kodi on Fire TV Stick, you’ll need to download the latest version from the official Kodi website and install it just like you would if it were a fresh install, only this time you’ll be given the option to update instead. Note that if you’re updating from an older version you’ll need to completely uninstall the old version first.

Crash and reboot loop

Problem: Kodi repeatedly crashes and starts up again in an endless loop.

Solution: A few things could be causing Kodi to get stuck in a crash and restart loop. First, try disconnecting your Firestick from the internet, then open Kodi. If that prevents the loop, then the problem is probably Kodi’s URLResolver dependency. If so, click the gear icon on the Kodi home screen and head to System settings. Find the Add-ons tab and select Manage dependencies. Click URLResolver, then Update.

If that doesn’t work, the issue is more likely an add-on or custom build. Try uninstalling add-ons one at a time starting with the most recently installed until you find the culprit. As a last resort, reinstall Kodi from scratch.

No app found to handle this file

Problem: This error message occurs when attempting to install Kodi on Fire TV from an APK file, but Fire OS has no compatible apps to handle APK files.

Solution: Start by following our guide on how to install Kodi on a Fire TV Stick. If you’ve followed those instructions and still get the “no app found to handle this file” error, then the problem is probably with the Downloader app. Make sure you’re using the latest version of Downloader, which supports the installation of APK files. A previous version did not, which caused the error.

Here’s how to update an app on Fire OS:

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, select Apps > Store
  2. Click the menu icon at the bottom fo the Store page
  3. Select My apps > Update available
  4. Click the Update button next to Downloader

Crash during playback

Problem: If Kodi crashes during playback, you may need to adjust some of the advanced settings like cache memory buffer size, CURL timeout, and buffer factor. These are set to a universal default but can be modified manually or by one of several “wizards”. The problem is that many people get it wrong and set these figures too high for the Fire Stick’s hardware to handle, resulting in crashes and other bad behavior. On the other hand, having these set too low can lead to long buffer times. Unfortunately, there are no magic numbers to enter here, even across seemingly identical devices.

Solution: We recommend using the Advanced Settings Wizard that comes with Ares Wizard. It will scan for and calculate the optimum settings for your device. Learn more about how to do this in our article on how to fix buffering on Fire TV.

Performance-related issues

Problem: This is a broad issue that can result in one or more possible behaviors that all stem from the Fire TV Stick being too underpowered for the task at hand. Symptoms include:

  • Lag
  • App crashes
  • Reduced video quality
  • Lower frame rate
  • Slow-motion video
  • Out-of-sync sound
  • Long buffering times

Solution: These aren’t so much bugs specific to Kodi as they are limitations of the Fire TV Stick hardware. For that reason, we recommend checking out our other article on how to speed up your Fire TV Stick.

Build-related issues

Problem: There’s no shortage of custom builds out there for Kodi, but sometimes they can have an adverse effect on performance or cause bugs when running Kodi on Fire TV. Almost all builds require more resources than stock Kodi, and most aren’t optimized for the Fire TV Stick’s limited resources. Because they aren’t usually vetted by experts, Kodi builds can also contain vulnerabilities, malware, and spyware that can damage your device and/or steal your private information.

Solution: If you encounter problems, learn how to uninstall a Kodi build on Fire TV here.

Hanging on shut down

Problem: Sometimes Kodi gets stuck when you attempt to close it. You’ll probably notice this behavior after a Kodi update of some sort. It occurs because of a failure to correctly update a database file, such as when upgrading from Kodi 18 to Kodi 19. Sometimes this can also cause a black screen on startup followed by the app crashing.

Solution: The solution is to delete a file called “addons” followed by a number and the .db file extension. In most cases, this will be addons27.db or addons20.db. Here’s how to delete it:

  1. Launch Kodi and select the Gear icon to open the settings menu
  2. Go to File manager > Profile Directory > Database
  3. Long press addons27.db, or whatever version of this file you have, and select DeleteHanging on shutdown kodi firestick

Problem: Overheating can permanently damage your Fire TV Stick. Since it’s probably plugged into the back of your TV and out of plain sight, the issue may be hard to spot. If you notice your Fire TV Stick is hot to the touch, we recommend first diagnosing the root of the problem. Overheating usually goes hand in hand with hardware performance issues. If you don’t have any of the other problems on this list, check out our guide on how to make your Fire TV Stick run faster.

Solution: Assuming you’ve done everything you can and the Fire TV is still overheating, you can try purchasing a USB-powered fan like this one. These handy gadgets plug into any USB port, which most modern TVs have nowadays. Point it at your Fire TV Stick, and you can make your Kodi device a bit less feverish.

Addon shows error on open

If you can’t even open a particular addon, it’s likely that it’s either incompatible with your version of Kodi, or only available to users in a country other than yours. VPN users can test this out by connecting to a server in the required location (for instance, you’ll need a US IP address to use the NHL TV addon or an Australian one to unblock Binge).

Failed to install a dependency

Problem: Some addons depend on other addons to do their job. Dependency errors often occur when new addons are installed or when an existing addon is updated, and the two addons are no longer able to work together. A common dependency error for many users deals with URLResolver. The culprit is often a repository that has gone dark. Users who previously used the TVAddons Fusion repository frequently encounter this error.

Solution: Disable repositories that no longer function so that Kodi will search in working repos instead.

Here’s how to disable a Kodi repository:

  1. Launch Kodi and select the Gear icon to open the settings menu
  2. Go to File manager and locate the repo that needs to be removed.
  3. Long press the repo and a context menu will appear. Select Remove source.

Of course, you may not have the dependency that you need in any other installed repo. In that case, you will need to either find another repository that has the dependency or download the dependency and install it directly via zip file.

Long buffer times can be caused by a lot of issues that we address in another article on how to fix buffering on Fire TV. But here’s a quick fix that works with many popular add-ons:

  1. Go to Add-ons > Video add-ons
  2. Select the addon that’s having trouble. Scroll down and select the Tools option. This may be called something different depending on the addon you’re using.
  3. Select the options to Clear providers and Clear cache

Buffering can also be caused by a slow internet connection. Even if you have fast internet, internet service providers often frown upon Kodi activity and throttle bandwidth accordingly. If you think this might be the case, we recommend using a VPN.

A VPN encrypts all of a device’s internet traffic and routes it through an intermediary server in a location of your choosing. This prevents your ISP from seeing the contents of your internet traffic and where it’s going to and from. This means your ISP can’t discriminate against certain types of traffic or sources.

BEST VPN FOR KODI:Our top recommendation is IPVanish, which offers plentiful speed so you no longer need to worry about buffering issues. You’ll also avail of better security and more privacy. IPVanish offers a 0-day risk-free guarantee.

Unable to connect to source

Problem: After installing a repository, a popup says Kodi is unable to connect to a source or the repository or add-on cannot be accessed.

Solution: This issue is often caused by a typo in the URL entered when adding a repository. Check the source address and ensure you’ve spelled it correctly. Remember to include “http://” at the beginning and that source URLs are case-sensitive. The repo’s file extension should also be included.

If that doesn’t work, then the repository has either moved to a new URL or gone offline. You can find out by opening a normal web browser on your phone or laptop and entering the URL. If the URL is not found or it’s empty, then you’ll have to find a new source address. Note that alternative hosts are not always trustworthy, so try to stick to links posted by the developer.

New addon causes Kodi to crash

Problem: A new add-on is causing Kodi to crash, preventing you from uninstalling it through Kodi.

Solution: You can manually remove Kodi add-ons from the directory where they are installed. On a Firestick, you’ll need an app to navigate the device’s file directory. We recommend downloading ES File Explorer from the default Amazon App Store. Open it up and navigate to Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi/files/.kodi/. The add-on will be stored in the userdata or addons directory. Delete addons as needed.

Device date and time mismatch

Problem: Kodi is unable to perform updates, searches, and/or play streams.

Solution: These issues might appear similar to those above. If you’ve had a go at all of the other fixes, it might be that your Firestick’s time and date are not set correctly. Kodi often requires the time to be in sync for these functions to work. This is a common problem on Firesticks and some users have been unable to find solutions. However, you can access the time and date settings by doing the following:

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, go to Settings > Preferences
  2. Scroll down to Time Zone
  3. Click Time Zone again and select your time zone.

If that doesn’t set the time correctly, you might need to perform a factory reset on the Firestick.

Addon search function not working

Problem: The search function inside an addon isn’t working.

Chances are the addon developer hasn’t updated it for the most recent version of Kodi. Unfortunately, there’s nothing the user can do about this. You’ll have to wait until a compatible update is available, or install the older version of Kodi.

Addons stopped working after an update

Problem: You recently upgraded to Kodi 19 from an older version and now some of your addons appear to be broken while others are not.

Kodi 19 was radically different from previous versions. As a result of changes to the way the system works, certain addons may not function properly until their developers update them for Kodi 19. Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can really do here except wait — if you’re struggling to find replacements, why not check out our list of the best Kodi addons in the meantime?

Get your log files

If you’re still struggling to find the root of a Kodi problem and you’ve reached the end of relevant Google results, it might be time to ask for help on a forum. Don’t just post your problem and expect other people to magically know the answer, though. You’ll need to post the contents of your log file for others to diagnose the problem.

You can access the log file on a Fire TV Stick in a couple of different ways that we’ll explain here.

The first is using the Kodi Log File Uploader, an addon in the official Kodi repository.

  1. Go to Add-ons > Install from repository > Kodi add-on repository > Program add-ons > Kodi LogFile Uploaderkodi logfile uploader 1
  2. Select Install
  3. Go back to the home screen and open the Settings menu by clicking the Gear icon.
  4. Go to System Settings > Logging and Enable debug logging
  5. Restart Kodi and make the error or bug occur again. You need to reproduce the problem for Kodi to log it.
  6. Head back to the main menu and select Add-ons > Program add-ons > Kodi LogFile Uploader and select the Uploader addon
  7. Kodi will upload your log file to a URL where you can find it. A message will pop up containing the URL, which looks like http://paste.ubuntu.com/########/kodi logfile uploader 2

Go to that URL and you’ll find your log file. Copy and paste the relevant contents of this file to whichever forum where you want to ask your question.

Note that if your problem involves Kodi crashing, then you’ll need to upload the log file from the previous session. To do this, long-press the Kodi LogFile Uploader add-on in step #6 and choose Settings. Check the option to Post the old logfile, from the previous time Kodi ran.

If you want to get your log file via some other means, you can find it at {storage}/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi/files/.kodi/temp/kodi.log

You can post the contents of your log file to the official Kodi forum or the official Kodi reddit, but be warned that you’ll find no help with third-party addons there. Discussion about unofficial addons breaks Team Kodi’s forum rules in both locations, even if the addon doesn’t infringe on copyrights. Instead, you might try /r/Addons4Kodi for those third-party addons.

Warning: Kodi should only be used for content to which you have the legal right to access. Neither the Kodi Foundation nor Comparitech advocates the use of Kodi for piracy.

Leave feedback

Once you solve your problem, it’s always good to leave feedback. We invite you to share your own tips and fixes in the comments. If you sought help on forums, always remember to let the community know whether their advice worked or not. Kodi can only continue to improve with help from its users.

This guide shows you how to install Kodi on Firestick or update to Kodi 17.6.

What is Kodi 17.6?

This build version, the last Kodi Krypton major revision before Kodi 18 Leia, doesn’t seem to affect much aside from those few bugs that have been annihilated. Of course, a few issues remain; else, why would anyone look forward to a build of Kodi 18 Leia? I believe Kodi 18 should be absolutely legen… wait for it—and I hope you’re not lactose intolerant, because… awe heck. Never mind. Let’s get back to our regularly scheduled programming and learn how to install Kodi on Firestick the easy way.

What’s in this Kodi 17.6 Install / Update Guide?

The first section below shows you how to very easily update Firestick Kodi Krypton to the latest Kodi 17.6 build appropriate to your particular Firestick or Fire TV. This method uses the Kodi Android Updaterwithin Kodi itself!

The second section belowincludes steps showing you how to install Kodi 17.6 on Firestick or Fire TV using an Android app called Downloader. This installation process will overwrite your existing Kodi if you have it installed already, though will let you keep your settings if you wish.

If you do have Kodi installed, you probably already know how important it is to run it through a secure VPN while using it, right? The massively coordinated takedown of Kodi repository and add-on developers just this past week should serve as a warning to Kodi users without protection.

Regarding the Gen 2 Fire TV:

You may opt for the 64 bit (arm64-v8a) version if you wish. Yours is the only Amazon Fire device with a 64 bit operating system. Using the 64 bit version gives no advantage whatsoever, as Kodi does not take advantage of any specific 64 bit architecture features. In fact, it is highly likely that you will encounter more bugs than within the 32 bit version. I only bring the 64 bit possibility up for completeness, and because some people like to impress friends with MOAR.

I cannot imagine the process being simpler than that. Well… yes; maybe I can, but then I’ve been told I have a really freakin’ wild imagination. I still don’t think flying unicorns farting rainbow lasers through cotton candy clouds to alight upon my Fire TV while granting the wish of an instant Kodi update can really happen. Can it?

This update process is brought to visual life with this infographic. Feel free to click on the image for a pdf representation of our Kodi 17.6 Update Infographic.

Part 3: Install a Kodi BUILD

Kodi 17 Post-Install Tutorial Video

The video below shows you what to do after you install Kodi 17 FireStick. These instructions also work for Amazon Fire TV, Android TV Box, or practically any device with enough storage available and Kodi installed (because Kodi is the same on all operating systems, or “cross-platform”):

We’ve used the immensely popular Kodi Xenon Build in this example, but you don’t have to install this one. There are many more available to suit your tastes. A few of the best can be found below.

How to Install Kodi 17.6 Krypton on Windows

If you’re using Kodi on a Windows computer, you might want to update to Kodi 17.6. If so, you’re in the right place! Here, we’ll tell you how to install Kodi 17.6 on Windows OS.

The first thing you’ll want to do is go to Kodi’s downloads and updates page, which you can access by clicking this link.

Where it says “Current release: Kodi v17.6 Krypton,” click the Installer link that will show up on the page. This will automatically start downloading the .exe file you need to update your Kodi system.

Once the file is installed, follow any prompts it gives you in order to complete the update.

An important thing to note is that if you already have a different version of Kodi installed on your Windows computer, make sure to install the .exe file in the exact same location as you installed that version. This will ensure a clean download and full upgrade success.

How to Install Kodi 17.6 Krypton on Mac

To update to Kodi 17.6 on Mac OS systems, you’ll want to follow a similar process to the Windows tutorial. Go to the Kodi downloads page by following this link to get started.

When you click the Installer link, the difference will be that a .dmg file will start downloading that contains the Kodi update. When it’s done downloading, double click on it to start the installation process.

Follow the prompts that the system gives you to finish integrating Kodi 17.6 on your Mac. Make sure to follow the step of dragging and dropping the application into your Applications folder so that the update completes successfully.

If you have a previous version of Kodi installed on your Mac, it won’t be hard to update to the new one. Mac OS makes this easy; no extra steps are required here.

Simply install the new version of Kodi onto your Mac computer and the old version will be overridden.

How to Install Kodi 17.6 Krypton on Linux

If you’re running a Linux operating system and want to update to Kodi 17.6, it may look complicated at first but is actually very simple.

If you have Ubuntu or an Ubuntu-based distribution, Kodi updates are included in them already. This means that you can install 17.6 directly from Ubuntu using simple commands.

Below, we’ll provide the code you need to install the Kodi update. Make sure to type this in very carefully so that the installation can proceed without a hitch.

sudo apt-get install software-properties-common

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install kodi

That’s all! Once you enter the code, Kodi should start installing the newest update on the system. If you have a third-party distribution, they aren’t usually supported by Kodi like Ubuntu, so make sure it’s running correctly if you install over a different one.

How to Install Kodi 17.6 Krypton on a Raspberry Pi

When you have a Raspberry Pi device, there is a built-in operating system called the Raspbian. Unfortunately, Kodi 17.6 is not supported yet on this OS, so you won’t be able to use the default OS to install the update.

But, don’t worry! There are many distributions that you can use with the Raspberry Pi that can help install Kodi updates. So, you can technically use Raspberry Pi to do this but make sure you have a distribution that supports it.

One distribution that we can recommend we use is LibreELEC. LibreELEC has released new software in its beta stages that is compatible with the Kodi 17.6 update.

If you can manage to install the LibreELEC onto an SD card and integrate it into your Raspberry Pi, you can launch its distribution and install Kodi updates.

Luckily, if you have any of the other systems listed above, you can go to the LibreELEC Krypton update page here and they will download the LibreELEC creator tool for you.

Kodi 17.6 Changes, Fixes & Updates

The Kodi 17.6 and 17.5 updates contained mostly bugfixes. Major new features really haven’t appeared in Krypton for some time. I’m sure the Kodi team of developers is holding all of the amazeballs for their Kodi 18 release.

Until you try out Kodi 17.6 Firestick for yourself, check out these bugs that have been fixed since the previously latest Kodi version (Kodi 17.5 Krypton):

  • Potential controller dialog crashes fixed
  • Occasional internal browser connection issues fixed
  • Fixed crashing when peripheral joystick add-on is disabled
  • Update standard scrapers to most current versions as of release date

How to Install Kodi on Firestick (Kodi 18 Sneak Peek)

Kodi 18 NOT Yet Ready For Beginners

If you love constantly tinkering with your software, then by all means, install Kodi 18. However, if your current Kodi setup is working for you and you just want to watch movies and TV shows and Sporting events, then don’t install Kodi 18 just yet. Wait for the developers to work out a few more bugs and release a stable version first. Wait until more TV addons are compatible with Kodi 18. Then, install Kodi 18 on Firestick.

Kodi 18 Beta is quite stable at this point, yet still may erase all of your existing Kodi data. This happens when you are forced to Clear Data after a failed Kodi 18 install. Only proceed if you acknowledge that you are fully aware of and willing to accept the consequences. Also, Kodi 18 does not work with most existing add-ons. Sure, some will work to an extent, but many more will get you half-way through a show and then… BAM! No more show. Restart and try to find the spot where you were dropped.

If, however, you really wish to peak at a piece of software that is still in beta development stage with no “wow factor” other than being too new to be cool, then take the following steps.

The easiest way to install Kodi 18 on Firestick is to use the steps as above (for installing Kodi 17) – but enter the address https://bit.ly/Kodi18nightly2017-11-17 instead of the URL address for Kodi 17 Krypton. This will install the nightly build as released on November 17, 2017. You can find all of the Kodi 18 builds listed at the Kodi.tv mirrors page for nightly development releases.

  1. Using your FireStick / Fire TV, go to the Home screen by pressing the Home button on the Fire TV remote.
  2. Go to Search
  3. Start typing to search for “es file explorer” until you see ES File Explorer show up in the list below
  4. Within the result list, select ES File Explorer, then press Download / Install / OK
  5. After ES File Explorer has installed, go back to the Fire TV Stick home screen
  6. Go to Apps
  7. Select ES File Explorer to launch ES File Explorer
  8. After ES File Explorer has launched, go to Download Manager (underneath Tools)
  9. Move the cursor to select the “+ New” button on the bottom of the screen.  Select the “+ New” button.
  10. In the File Path field, enter “https://bit.ly/Kodi18nightly2017-11-17”
  11. In the Name field, enter “Kodi 18” (or any name you want)
  12. Move the cursor to the Download button and select Download
  13. Once the Kodi 18 Leia APK file has downloaded, select Open File
  14. Choose Install
  15. Once Kodi has installed, go back to the Fire TV home screen
  16. Go to Apps
  17. Select Kodi to launch Kodi!
  18. Optional, yet HIGHLY Recommended: Unblock Kodi Addons by using a VPN (60% off right here!)

Don’t forget the last step of the process above!

Why? Because the last step of the Kodi 17 Firestick install process sets up TV Addons on your device and The best VPN for Kodi secures your Internet connection permanently by using automated, military-grade encryption and location masking. Use my Kodi VPN YouTube video to set this up in just a few minutes on FireStick, Android, iPhone, PC or any other device. Furthermore, you should use a VPN to hide Firestick IP address along with all your other Internet activity in general.

Kodi 17 First and Last Impressions

All things considered, Kodi 17.6 Firestick is a welcomed upgrade. Furthermore, what an improvement Kodi Krypton itself has been over Kodi Jarvis! Right off the bat, the dashboard home screen became very “smooth”, with lots of fine detail. The animations have also been much smoother. Although, having the Fire TV Box as opposed to a Firestick does help, because the additional CPU power allows Kodi menus to animate more smoothly.

The playback and TV Addon install process was extremely fast and successful as well. Finally, being able to download Kodi 17, install it along with some add-ons, then be watching a movie all in 5 minutes flat… Kodi 17 wins! Bring on Kodi 18!

If you have trouble with the Kodi 17 Firestick install process, then look for answers on the KFireTV website!
