Multiple new Sonic games are coming in 2021 for the series' 30th anniversary

Multiple Sonic games are on the way for the speedy hedgehog's 30th anniversary next year.

Sonic fansite Tails' Channel spotted the news in a Sonic series advertisement placed in the summer issue of Licensing Source Book Europe. Along with running down a quick greatest-hits of Sonic stats for potential licensors - that is, the folks who might want to sell you a Sonic T-shirt or shot glass or body pillow - the ad specifically mentions that 2021 is going to be a big year.

"A year of celebration - new games, digital content, events, major announcements, and a tailored licensing program," the advertisement reads. Sega celebrated Sonic's 25th anniversary back in 2016 by announcing both Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, though they didn't come out until 2017. Those are still the most recent Sonic games if you don't count spinoffs like Team Sonic Racing and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Sonic Mania was a fan-pleasing retro throwback largely developed by a team of independent creators, while Sonic Forces from Sonic Team itself had a much more tepid reception. It's too early to tell what game announcements Sega may have planned for Sonic's 30th anniversary, but a Sonic Mania 2 announcement would be perfectly timed and extremely welcome.

Beyond games, I wouldn't be surprised if the Sonic 30th anniversary celebrations include the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (the movie), since it's currently set to hit theaters in April 2022.

While we wait to find out more about what's next for Sonic, see what else is on the way with our big list of video game release dates.

New Sonic the Hedgehog games are coming in 2021

Mario may be celebrating his 35th anniversary, but erstwhile rival mascot Sonic the Hedgehog is here to remind you that another big gaming milestone is coming up, too.

A new Sega ad has been printed in a licensing resource aimed at retailers and licensees that outlines 2021 as a 'year of celebration' for all things Sonic the Hedgehog (thanks, Tails Channel).

As per pages 90 and 91 of the document, the iconic character's 30th anniversary will be “a year of celebration – new games, digital content, events, major announcements and a tailored licensing programme.”

Sonic 30th Anniversary

Note the use of the plural 'games' there; it sounds like Sega has more than just one project to announce.

Traditionally, Sega is pretty good at celebrating major Sonic milestones: for the 10th anniversary in 2001, we got Sonic Adventure 2, and for the 20th anniversary in 2011, we got Sonic Generations.

It stands to reason that Sega will want to share various updates on Sonic projects to promote the 30th anniversary – whether that's the status of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, the next mainline game in the series, or perhaps even a sequel to Sonic Mania remains to be seen.

2020 upcoming sonic games

Sonic Central Stream: Everything Announced, Including a Brand New Sonic Game

Update: Sega confirmed that Sonic 3 will also be in widescreen.

Been seeing quite a few of you asking about Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origins and whether or not we will see the game in widescreen there.

Just to clear that up...YES! Sonic 3 will also be widescreen!

Today's Sonic Central stream has revealed a number of new projects featuring the world's premier blue hedgehog, all designed to tie into the series' 30th-anniversary celebrations. Here's everything revealed at the Sonic Central stream, from a new Sonic game to a full Sonic Colors remaster.

New Game from Sonic Team Announced

Sega announced that its Sonic Team – which has previously released Sonic Generations and Sonic Forces – has begun work on a new mainline Sonic game. A teaser trailer (above) revealed that the game will arrive in 2022 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. No other information was revealed, but the teaser shows Sonic picking up speed in a forest setting, which seems to cause digital effects around him before his trailer leaves behind what looks like a runic symbol.

Sonic Colors: Ultimate Revealed

Sonic Colors: Ultimate is a remaster of the 2010 platformer, which will come to PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (through Epic Games Store) on September 7. Developed by Blind Squirrel Entertainment (Mass Effect: Legendary Edition), the remaster will update the game's look and feel, as well as add new features and a new mode called Rival Rush.

Sonic Origins Compilation Announced

Sega also announced Sonic Origins, a compilation of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. No release date has been announced for the collection.

Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps Animated Short Announced

To accompany the Sonic Colors remaster, Sega also announced Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps, a two-part animated series featuring long-time Sonic voice actor Roger Craig Smith (who recently departed and then rejoined the role).

Sonic Cameos

Sonic will also make appearances in Two Point Hospital – adding Sonic-themed items on July 22 – and Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - The Official Video Game – with players able to dress their athletes in Sonic gear.

Sonic Games on New Platforms

Sega announced that Epic Games Store will see the release of Sonic Mania on June 24, PlayStation Now will receive Sonic Forces, Sonic Mania, and Team Sonic Racing on June 1, and Amazon Luna will get Sonic Mania and Team Sonic Racing later this year.

Sonic Mobile Game Events

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle will receive Super Sonic as a character, Sonic Dash will add a pirate-themed event (with Pirate Sonic and Captain Shadow costumes), Sonic Racing will add classic characters, cars, and tracks, and the Werehog will be a Halloween addition to both Forces and Dash.

Sonic Prime for Netflix Update

The Man of Action team is working with Sega and Netflix on a new animated project. Joe Kelly from Man of Action offered a short update revealing Sonic Prime will be a 24-episode series where Sonic must, what else? Save the universe. Sonic Prime will premiere on Netflix sometime in 2022.

Video game series

Sonic the Hedgehog is a video gameseries. It is published by Sega, with entries developed by Sega, Sonic Team, Dimps, SIMS Co., Ltd., BioWare, and Sumo Digital. The series debuted in 1991 with the video game, Sonic the Hedgehog, released for the Mega Drive video game console (named Sega Genesis in North America). Most Sonic the Hedgehog games have either been platform games or released for Sega video game consoles and handheld game consoles (handhelds) dating from the Sega Genesis to the eighth generation of video game consoles (2012–present). However, some of the original games were ported into versions on third-party home consoles and developed by several companies. As of March 2011, the series has collectively sold 89 million copies worldwide across both the platform games and spin-offs.[1]

Most of the games in the franchise are platform games, although the series also includes other genres such as racing video games, fighting games, action-adventure games, role-playing video games, and sports games. Each game focuses on the titular protagonist Sonic the Hedgehog, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog. It also features a large cast of other characters such as Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Shadow the Hedgehog, and the Chao creatures.
