20 of the Best Modern Flushmount Lights
Let’s talk about light fixtures, specifically flush mounts. Over the years, I feel like flush mounts have gotten a bad rap, mostly due to the horrendous “nipple lights” that were a staple in homes throughout the late 80’s-90’s (if you don’t know what I’m talking about check out the photo below and you’ll GET IT). But unless you live in a home with tall ceilings in every single space or can lighting throughout, chances are you will need a few flush mount light fixtures. The great news is that we now have a ton of great options for these that can look beautiful and add a little personality to your space. Since I live in an older home with lower ceilings in most rooms, I actually have a ton of flush mount light fixtures throughout and am always on the lookout for the best modern options!Read more
I have been SO excited to share this amazing transformation of one of my latest design projects. This client's bathroom was original to the home and had not been updated since they had lived there. I was so excited when they asked me to help with the design and coordination of this renovation especially after hearing their vision and ideas for the space. Miller Team Renovations handled all the tile and renovation work from start to finish and they were wonderful to work with. I appreciated that they kept me updated every step of the way and allowed me to make every single little decision about the space, which is so rare.Read more

Last week's Fixer Upper was a first, a houseboat renovation! I loved the simple, clean, midcentury look of this design and especially all the exterior updates that they did to modernize this 70's houseboat. The mix of raw wood, unique black siding, and the modern windows on the outside of the houseboat completely transformed the entire look. If I ever have a houseboat, I would want it to look just like this! Check out the amazing before + after below:
My favorite area of this renovation was the simple, modern living space. It was the perfect mix of midcentury and rustic, while still feeling cozy and comfortable. This home was designed with a more masculine style in mind, but I think that the overall look would work for just about anyone! Not only are all the neutrals easy to work with but the simple, clean lines are timeless, making this space both functional and stylish for years to come.
The star of the space is this gorgeous gray midcentury couch- I've linked some similar options below ranging from Ikea to West Elm so there's something for every budget. The metal sconce adds a little industrial touch to the space and I love the little bit of brass on it too (I've linked a lot of options below under $100!). The wood circular shelf is the perfect minimal wall art that also serves as a little storage space too.
My favorite part of the space: that cute little row of midcentury planters by the window! Such a simple way to add a pop of brightness that still fits in with the overall style of the room. The midcentury coffee table is the perfect size for the space and I love the touch of dark wood against all the white. The printed shag rug adds a little texture, pattern, and pulls everything together.
This minimal style is so easy to work with because it doesn't take much as far as accessories to make a space feel complete. Some textured pillows and a throw with a little pattern make the couch feel cozier and less stark. The coffee table is decorated with a simple stack of books, a candle, and some ceramic vases keeping with the clean, mid-century vibe. A mid-century magazine rack provides storage without taking up as much space, or blocking as much window light, as a side table. I've linked many similar accessories below to help you achieve this look, whether you are starting from scratch, or just want to add a touch of mid-century style to a space.

1. Dressing room chandelier: Target | 2. Living room ceiling light: Wayfair | 3. Guest bedroom ceiling light: Lowe's
My main focus this week has been finalizing and ordering all our new lighting for the house. It is kind of overwhelming to pick out SO many light fixtures all at once, but thankfully I have been able to shop online and slowly narrow down my favorites over the past few months. I tried to stay within a reasonable budget for all of our lighting. I really can't stand to pay much more than $100 for most lights although I did make an exception on a few statement pieces that I felt were important. I made up for it by finding a few super cheap thrifted vintage lights (one being for our guest bath for $1!) that I can spruce up with new bulbs and paint. Above are the lights I picked out for our living room, guest bedroom, and my dressing room. For the living room I needed a flush-mount ceiling light that didn't hang down super far. Flush mounts are definitely the hardest style to find fashionable light options in, so I was thrilled to find this one with the beaded chandelier look. This will definitely fit perfectly with the more rustic, eclectic style of our living room. For the guest bedroom upstairs, I also needed a flush mount because the ceilings are too low in there for a ceiling fan. I fell in love with these super minimal, industrial flush mount lights from Lowe's and am going to be using them in a couple of other rooms too. The light fixture I'm probably most excited about is this fun midcentury-inspired chandelier for my dressing room. This is really going to be the focal point of the room and I think the brass will look so gorgeous with the pale pink walls.
Front Porch Lanterns: Lowe's | Side Porch Entry Ceiling Light: Lowe's | Back Deck Light: Lowe's | Side Porch Ceiling Fan: Lowe's
We don't have anything left in our budget to deal with the outside of the house at the moment, but we can add a tiny bit of curb appeal by switching out some of the outdoor lighting. The lanterns that were on the front porch (on each side of the front door) hung way too low and were super outdated. I am updating them with these larger, classic black lanterns from Lowe's. I kept it simple with the lights for our side entryway and back deck, but just having a new, clean light fixtures will make a huge difference. We also had a ceiling fan on our side porch (but it was barely hanging on and quite sad looking!) that we will be replacing with a newer, slightly larger fan that has a light on it too. This fan is a great outdoor, budget-friendly option that is classic but with modern finishes.
1. Master bedroom ceiling fan: Lowe's | 2. Master bathroom vanity sconces: Bulbs.com | 3. Master bathroom ceiling light: Lowe's
In the master bedroom I splurged a bit on a more expensive, larger fan (because my husband is serious about sleeping with all fans on high and the thermostat on 65, I know- freezing!). I liked the modern look of this fan and loved the finish on the blades. It also has an oil rubbed bronze finish on the metal which matches all our fixtures in the master bath. For the master bathroom we will have these industrial-look sconces (super affordable!) on each side of the mirror above the sink. I also went with my favorite Lowe's flush mount light for the ceiling in the center of the room.
Our electrician is coming this Thursday to begin hanging most of our new lights! Did I mention we are moving in THIS weekend?! We are trying to complete the bulk of the renovation this week (hopefully!). Stay tuned for lots of new updates to come this week!

2021 Light Fixture Store Reviews
Wayfair has become very well-known in the home goods market; with its slogan of "a zillion things home" you would be right to expect that they are likely to carry just about anything you could dream of wanting for your house, lighting and much more.
Their search feature is very robust; items can be filtered by price and brand, among other criteria, and your results can be sorted by customer ratings, recommendation likelihood, or, once again, by price. Wayfair offers a much smaller selection of lighting brands at only seven total. However, their prices are competitive when comparing items across retailers.
Wayfair really hopes to gain your business with a wide variety of customer-pleasing features: free shipping on orders over $49 and a flat fee of $4.99 on all other orders, free shopping advice from renovation experts at their toll-free number, two-day delivery on nearly a half-million items in stock, 3% of your purchase price back in their automatic (free) rewards program, and a 30-day return policy through their self-service return center.
While all of these advantages make Wayfair very attractive, we can only give them a three-star rating because of the high number of customer complaints. While they have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau for their resolution of such complaints filed, many consumer reviews on the BBB site describe dissatisfaction with Wayfair's product quality, slow or inaccurate delivery, and negative interactions with customer service representatives. More than 50% of customers surveyed by the BBB would not recommend Wayfair.
However, we know that it is rare for consumers to contact the BBB when they are completely satisfied and we know that Wayfair has a huge customer base, which can skew such review rates. So we give Wayfair a three-star rating for its highly competitive pricing and low shipping costs, with the recommendation that customers be proactive with any discrepancies in product quality or customer service issues.
Who Has the Best Light Fixtures?
Light fixtures are often considered the jewelry of the home and can make or break the overall aesthetic. Why choose the same old typical light fixture when you can choose something unique, that you really love? Lighting specialty stores are generally far and few between in most towns. Many shoppers are limited to the small and often unimpressive lighting selections found at the big box hardware stores. What customers don't know is that thousands of unique and beautiful lighting fixtures are available with only a few clicks of the mouse.
Literally thousands of light fixtures are available from hundreds of companies and unfortunately most of us will only see a tiny fraction. However, shopping online greatly opens the doors to the world of light fixture options. Online companies are able to provide a significantly larger selection in the thousands from a huge selection of manufacturers.

A light fixture is an electric device used to illuminate a room. They can be used to beautify a space and add to the aesthetic. Buying a nice light fixture is like buying a piece of furniture because they can make such a statement in a room. Some light fixtures are basic and nearly unnoticeable, such as can lights, while other light fixtures are large, hang from the ceiling, contain ornate details, and use multiple light bulbs.
Most light fixtures are going to differ in the way they are installed in the ceiling or wall. You'll usually have to assemble the light fixture before you can even begin the installation process. Every light fixture comes with step-by-step details for assembly as well as an inventory of all the parts included and what they are for. Follow the instructions for assembly and installation. If you need additional help, you could look up a video online or hire an electrician.
The price of a light fixture depends on the brand, materials, size, weight, and style. If you're going for something simple and timeless, you could stay in the $100 price range. However, for a modern, stylish light fixture you could easily spend $500 or more. Some retailers offer crystal or diamond chandeliers that cost upwards of $50,000. There are thousands of light fixtures to choose from in all different price ranges. Whatever you choose, keep in mind that the light fixture will be a staple part of your home that you might have forever. Make sure you select something you love, even if it is priced slightly higher than you planned for!
Whether the style of your space is farmhouse, modern, chic, industrial, or bohemia, there are light fixtures you can buy online to match. There are eight main categories of light fixtures that you might choose from depending on the design of your walls and ceilings. They include architectural, recessed (like can lights), track, undercabinet, pendants, chandeliers, ceiling, and wall sconces. Selecting which of these designs will work best for your space is one of the first steps when you shop for light fixtures online.
Some light fixtures will come with the bulbs they need, so you won't have to make a trip to the store or spend extra money on them. However, most light fixtures have a particular size of bulb they need, but you can choose the temperature of bulb you prefer. The primary colors are soft white, bright white/cool white, and daylight. Depending on if you like a room to have more yellow or white lighting, you can select the type of light bulb that creates the ambiance you like best.
Yes, it is possible to return a light fixture. Maybe it doesn't match your decor like you hoped or the size is different than you'd imagined. Either way, most light fixture retailers will offer anywhere between a 30- and 90-day return policy for unused items. You'll usually be able to send it back for a full refund or a store credit so you can exchange it for a new light fixture.
Some of the most stunning light fixtures end up being big and heavy. To stay on the safe side, it is best to buy a brace to support the weight. The drywall of plaster on a ceiling is not meant to support heavy objects, so to avoid any issues you can purchase a brace for around $20 at your local hardware store. There are plenty of online videos to walk you through the installation process safely.
If you have the money and the eye for it, adding a beautiful light fixture to all your rooms will stun everyone who walks through your doors. However, it is not necessary to have unique lighting in every room. Some of the main areas where fancy light fixtures can make a big difference are your entryway, dining room, living room, home office, and kitchen. These are high-traffic areas where the light fixtures will both be used and enjoyed often.
Continued from above...
Prices of light fixtures are often more competitive than those found local as these online companies have smaller overhead costs. It's important to know what to look for when shopping online for light fixtures. Before you make the move to purchase a light fixture, you should consider the following:
- Selection. How large of a selection of lighting fixtures can you expect to find at each store?
- Pricing. How do the prices compare to other online retailers? Is the shipping affordable?
- Return Policy. In the event you're not satisfied with your purchase, does the company enable you to return the light fixture? Will you encounter a restocking fee?
- Customer Service. Are their representatives available to assist with questions and how satisfied have previous customers been while shopping at each company?
